I have seen similar cut/paste issues with xchat, and I'm trying to track
them down. There are open bugs about Xchat locking the clipboard
(something I've only seen rarely, but not limited to XChat), and I
personally have issues with cutting from xchat windows into other apps.
However, the auto-cut on highlight behavior is not only inherent in
enarly every variation of XWindows window managers, but also the vast
majority of Windows IRC clients. (eg.. mIRC does it :( ). Taking that
away would be a violation of POLA for IRC users switching from UNIX ->
Windows XChat or mIRC -> Windows XChat. Obviously, the solution is to
make it work, not turn it off.
I'm trying to track it down right now but I'm having problems
reproducing it, so bear with me.

Hrm. Never seen this, but there may be workarounds. Windows windows get
a message when they lose focus, perhaps xchat could intercept that
message and work around the gtk bug by forcing the menu closed. I'll
write that down :)
