Such behavior is news to me.

Since it's not the case that every other program closes its window on
^W, then there's no compelling reason to introduce this oddity into
xchat.  I have no other programs that close windows with ^W.

Exactly.  Losing information by unpredictably closing a
window/tab/whatever when one uses a conventional command to delete a
word is counter to this principle.
