On my system it shows up as a "yen" sign. It even did when I read that 
mail, so I thought you might know something about it, but no, with the 
font I'm using now, it's an ordinary backslash. Perhaps this is a 
problem with the fixed(misc), or is it misc(fixed)-font.

Ah there we go. When I changed the encoding to UTF-8, the font changed, 
and now it's a yen sign again.

In other words, try changing your font.
