I signed up to this list to find out how to join multiple channels when
only some of them have keys.  before i could even figure out what the
address was to mail to, i managed to find someone who had already answered
the question.  Thank you very much sirs!  My slow conversion from XP to
linux is progressing well.

This type of feature could perhaps use a little blurb in the documentation,
as it was no where to be found for me.
"To join multiple channels when not all of them have a key, use the
following syntax where channel1 and channel3 have keys, while channel2 and
4 do not:
'#channel1,#channel2,#channel3,#channel4 key1,,key3,'
