X-chat: odds and ends questions
Hiya,
I'm new to Linux and after playing around a while with other clients have
gravitated to X-chat. I love it.
I have a few mixed questions and requests. I'm sure they are common ones but
- go on someone, make a newbie smile :) Or at least save me hours trawling
through the archives and maybe address these all in one go...
(And if any of them need coding/recompiling, and arent too hard... name the
file and what to add where and I'll give it a go - brave newbie, eh?)
(1) I am active on three different networks/channels. On each, I use
different "ident-names" and "real-names" information. On WIndows/mIRC its
easy - I installed mIRC 3 times with different defaults for each. Can anyone
suggest a solution I could use for Xchat? (I'd do the same only I cant
figure out where in the code it defines the settings file. So each would
overwrite the others settings. Perhaps theres a more elegant solution?)
(2) Likewise on each I save my logs to a different place, have different
words to highlight - again, do I have 3 different settings files for 3
different versions, and where might I specify the location of each?
I guess the requested feature would be - in the panel where you enter your
nick and names and choose a server, to have an option "Get these from my
settings file" - and a list of "recently used settings files".
(3) How does one add "my current nick" to the "words to highlight" box? On
mIRC one tells it to highlight $me, on X-Chat this doesnt seem to be how to
do it.
(4) Is there any way to get the colour bar to pop up (as mIRC does when you
press ctrl-K)? Otherwise I'm forever opening and closing it. if not, could
there be?
(5) BTW its good being able to click on colours directly, neat touch that
mIRC doesnt have, but I think somethings missing. If the cursor is in front
of one colour, or you've just clicked on one colour, then RIGHT clicking on
a colour shouldn't add %C<n> but ,<n> thus setting the _background_ colour
instead. At present to set the background colour you have to click, then go
back and delete the %C replacing it with "," manually. Wasteful.
(6) The highlighting of tabs and tree entries to show new lines - (a) is it
possible to set your own colour. The default of red isnt clearly visible on
my preferred background colour. (b) Also can one set the colour for
highlighting tabs/tree when new lines are received matching your "highlight"
text?
(7) How might I make the input box multi-line, possibly with a small up/down
button at the side of it?
(8) The lag-meter... is that to a channel, to other users, to my server,
or...? (Theres a difference between how lagged I am to *my* server, and how
lagged I am to the other servers or users on a channel, for netsplit and
should-I-change-servers detection)
(9) When X-chat isn't connecting to a server, it takes a long long time to
say so. It cant accept multiple ports for a server (though I dont know if
thats a problem). You need to manually enter the various servers you might
want as alternatives, rather than having them there. or maybe I'm mistaken.
Comments from anyone more used to using X-chat?
Many thanks anyhow - those questions are the main ones, they'll do for now.
As said, I'm new, very new, to linux, programming and X-chat itself. But if
any of these questions have answers I'll try them, and if any of them could
be done with small patches and basic knowhow, some kind-hearted list-member
would be willing to help with that, I'd muchly appreciate it.
Meantime thanks for an excellent program. I hope to learn more as time goes
on.
Paul.
