I've seen no less than three different, incompatible specifications
for an irc:// URI. You can see two of them by looking through the
expired experimental RFCs and mozilla documentation.
Both of them suffer crippling issues with length and readability;
ultimately, a URI (designed to reference a file) just isn't a very
good representation of an IRC object (multiple overlapping namespaces
with complicated interaction). Square pegs into round holes...
An ircchannel:// URI type would probably be a better solution. Feel
free to try and create one.
