No, did you try xchat -h ?

1.9.1+ already supports this, but it always launches a new instance.

$ ./xchat -h
xchat 1.9.1
Usage: ./xchat [OPTIONS]... [URL]

Options:
  -d,  --cfgdir DIRECTORY   use a different config dir
  -a,  --no-auto            don't auto connect
  -v,  --version            show version information

URL:
  irc://server:port/channel

$ xchat -h
xchat 1.8.9 Options:

   --cfgdir <dir> -d	 : use a different config dir
   --noauto       -a	 : don't auto connect
   --version      -v	 : show version information
