I don't know why I missed this on the first pass...

DALnet DOES NOT distribute ANY plugins or scripts. If the user you're
referring to seemed to be claiming that there was some script or
plugin called LIDENT and that it was in some way OFFICIALLY distributed
by DALnet, they're lying and this should be a REALLY BIG CLUE[tm] to you that
that user is NOT to be trusted in the future on anything of any
significance.

DALnet does allow registered users (anyone who registers a nick or
channel) to set up a limited-space web site for their nick or for
their channel. Often, unscrupulous users will choose nicks or
channels that SOUND official, not just for the sake of online
deception, but also to set up official looking web pages in the
user area (anything on the http://home.dal.net/ server claiming
to be an official DALnet page or site is trying to pull a fast one)
often for the purpose of distributing scripts, plugins or programs
that claim to be one thing but are really another (i.e. scripts
with backdoors to steal passwords; scripts or plugins that turn
your system into an IRC spam drone; antivirus scanners/disinfectors
that in reality plant a trojan or other backdoor on your system).

If someone tries to pass off a home.dal.net site as an official
one, get a timestamped log of the user making the claim
(a timestamp can be as simple as "This conversation took place
on 4-APR-2002 GMT -0600" is fine for people who don't automatically
log and timestamp their IRC sessions) and report it to
webteam@dal.net or any available online IRC oper.
