a) Maybe you should have asked the person who recommended the plugin to you
where to get it and if he knew that you're using xchat or if he was
just assuming that you were using mIRC.
b) I'd be highly suspicious of any script or plugin that someone you
don't know well recommends that you install, especially if the script
or plugin comes recommended from someone you don't know well on IRC.
This is a SERIOUS security risk. The consequences of installing
scripts you don't completely understand or installing untrustworthy plugins
can range from turning your computer into a spam drone to having backdoors
into your system which might be used to steal nick or channel passwords.
That being said:
There's no way that a plugin on your IRC *client* is going to prevent
anyone on the *server* from using your registered nick, particularly
while you're offline.
Applicable to DALnet - all WITHOUT having to install any questionable
scripts or plugins:
- If you set up an access mask for your nick to avoid identifying with
your nick password, do not make the access mask overly permissive. If
you're on a dialup ISP with dynamically assigned IPs (i.e. you get
a different IP address everytime you log in), you probably shouldn't
be using an access mask for your nick.
- Since your nick is registered, you have a couple options:
- /nickserv ghost <your-nick> <your-nickpass>
Specifying the nickpass identifies you to services as being the
rightful owner of the nick. This command disconnects the user
currently using <your-nick>
- While your nick is set to <your-nick>, you can set the ENFORCE
option on your nick by using the
/nickserv set enforce on
command. This will force anyone trying to use your nick to
/identify with the password for the nick or be forcibly
renicked.
See
http://www.dal.net/services/servdetail.php3?type=nickserv
for documentation of DALnet /nickserv commands.
