You simply CAN NOT connect to an IRC server (let alone join a chan)
both with \nick\ and |nick|. In fact, both those nicks are the same
nick. As it is stated in rfc2812, section 2.2:

   Because of IRC's Scandinavian origin, the characters {}|^ are
   considered to be the lower case equivalents of the characters []\~,
   respectively. This is a critical issue when determining the
   equivalence of two nicknames or channel names.

So, |NICK| is simply the uppercase version of \nick\, and as nicknames
are not case sensitive...
