No, you didn't make a mistake, the patch simply wasn't made against 1.8.8.
What you see is patch(1) trying to apply the patch using the context lines
in the diff file, because the line numbers aren't corrent any more. But for
some files, the difference is too much, and patch gives up. I've manually
applies the patch to 1.8.8 and made a new patch file, available at
<http://dfx.homeip.net/xchat/dcc-throttle-0.2-1.8.8.patch>.
