Thats your problem then. Im guessing that in X-Chat 1.8.8 the parsing of 
the PREFIX was
finally added/fixed, and servers not giving the proper prefix in the 005 
reply wont "have" the support since they dont
proclaim to have the mode. Same thing goes for mIRC.

When connecting to a server or when doing a /version you should recieve 
something looking like this:

SAFELIST SILENCE KNOCK IRCOPS WATCH=128 MODES=6 MAXCHANNELS=10 MAXBANS=60 
MAXEXEMPTS=60 NICKLEN=30 TOPICLEN=307 CHANTYPES=#& CHANMODES=be,k,l,N 
PREFIX=(aohv)*@%+ NETWORK=SomeIRC are available on this server

The PREFIX tells the client what modes and prefixes for those modes are. 
Without them, the client will have to assume the IRC standard (ov)@+ modes 
are the only supported modes.
