Hmm, Beat him in the head with a spoon perhaps? So far I've had to help a pal who did the mistake of installing Mandrake 8.0 as a newbie and tried to get Xchat to work with it ; ) needless to say, he didn't install the -devel packages for anything... and to find out what went wrong with his compile across the phone was not fun :/
Although i have to say that urpmi is a good thing (Tm) ; )
As for the multiple-builds, i think it should be possible to make several binary rpm's with the one and single spec file... Though how is a bit beyond me for the moment.. something to look into perhaps...

Ohh, wait until you start repackaging Gnome ; ) then you start the real amusement.. ."now why doesnt make install work here, ohkay, doitthehackybuggyway." And others.. : )

mmh, Yeah, RedHat has been doing the same with OpenSSL 0.9.5 and QT, they did the mean way with freetype and bundled both 2.0 and 1.4 in the same rpm.
But, it does add a whole lot of troubles for us packagers...
(hint hint, somone donate me a development machine with mandrake and I'll serve them with packages ;)
