Can't you run gdb/xchat from console? What's the equivilent of
ctrl-alt-F1/2/3 on Solaris? That way you should be able to see gdb's
output even if X dies.
Also, perl is usually very broken on Solaris, so I'd compile with
./configure --disable-perl
