Hallo,
I just found out that the (albeit old) version of Xchat that i have installed (1.6.4) does not recall and/or restore the away status when you get disconnected and then reconnect to the server.. is this something that can be set somewhere? or am I requesting a feature now? ;) 

ie..
connect to x.net
join channels.. 
set away
---ping timeout---
reconnect
rejoin channels
---- but the away status is not restored..
