What's wrong with ignore? !'s are used to separate nick & user:

nick!user@host.com

is the normal format in irc.

*shrug* ...  is this a 1.5.3 bug report? I think it's a bit irrelevant now.
1.5.3 is not only old, but a devel version. Paste the compile errors you
get with newer versions, I've even heard of it compiling on irix & aix so
I'm sure it can be solved.
