basic problems using xchat

Using 1.5.3 (because nothing later compiles):

o Do I have unreasonable expectations for /ignore, or is it broken for
everyone?  What's this business with !'s?

o Surely there's *some* way to keep each inviter spam message from
opening up a new tab.   It'd be nice to be able to direct them all into
one tab, at least, especially since the scroll arrows on the tab bar
don't work.   My suspicion is that each tab gobbles a file descriptor or
two, and that there's an fd leak somewhere.  I currently have 15 tabs
and 4 channel windows, and yet xchat has 219 files open.
