I'm running Mandrake, which might have been part of the problem.  But it 
turns out I was running Bastille (the firewall client) and even though I had 
all of the configurable things open rather than closed, identd is one of 
those things that gets blocked.  Once I uninstalled Bastille, everything was 
fine.  Thanks for your help, everyone.
