i came across this bug too once, and i didn't have anything to do with my
named, it's definitely something in xchat.  after my isp died (which it does
often), xchat tried to reconnect to the irc server over and over again, up
to a point where it couldn't look up the hostname any more.  when my isp was
back up, i tried to connect xchat somewhere, but it still said it couldn't
look up the hostname.  i also tried a few different servers, it had the same
problem with all of them.  and then xchat crashed, while i was trying to
connect somewhere...  after i restarted it, it worked again.
