Good idea, and I would add one more to this :

What about an attribute on a per channel basis which would be "Pop-up on Red" ?

So we could flag 2-3 channels that would pop up only when traffic occur,
allowing us to just read the channel doing something else, without the
need to manually swap them. Sure if the channels have huge traffic it would
become flickering, but then you wouldn't use that.

If channels are tabbed, the tabs would just go front, and if the channels
are in separate window, then they would deiconify. In that case, could be
cool to have the reverse : after x minutes of inactivity the channel window
would iconify itself.
