What's new in BrowserHawk 6.0

- Several powerful new properties were added, including:
ServicePack, Plugin_Custom, Firewall, OpenPorts, SSLEnabled, Gecko,
GeckoBuildDate, NETCLRInstalled, NETCLRVersion, and ImagesEnabled.
- New ServicePack property now provides specific information about the
browser's installed service pack, if any, as well as any "Q" patches
installed. For example, ";SP1;Q279328;".
- Updated plug-in detection for Flash 6 / MX, Shockwave, RealOne, Java,
and SVG 3.0.
- Seamless integration of CountryHawk with BrowserHawk for customers
that own both products. CountryHawk enables you to instantly detect the
visitor's country of origin, with no reverse-DNS required. See

- You can now detect your own custom plug-ins and plug-ins not natively
detected by BrowserHawk.
- Enhanced connection speed testing - you can now control the balance
between testing time and accuracy of results. For example, if you only
want to detect dial up Vs. broadband, you can speed up the test; if you
want to get finer accuracy on the results you can test using more data.
- Download Time Estimator - You can now point BrowserHawk to a file on
your server and ask it to return the estimated download time for the
user, based on their connection speed. The time can be returned either
as the raw number of seconds, or as a formatted string such as "< 1
minute", "7 minutes", and "1 hour, 6 minutes".
- The SSLKeySize property has been enhanced so that you can now
optionally check the user's key size (128 vs. 40 bit, etc) from an HTTP
page, *without* having to redirect them to an HTTPS page to detect the
setting!
- BrowserHawk supports logging of browser statistics to a database of
your choice, with no programming required. These stats are far beyond
any other reporting tool on the market. This reporting has been
enhanced with BrowserHawk 6 to log all new properties found in this
release, as well as two additional user defined fields at your disposal.

- BrowserHawk now detects when a user has turned off their images.
- New Firewall property - BrowserHawk now detects whether a user is
behind a firewall or network configuration that in general is blocking
outbound traffic on most ports. This is useful if your site uses
streaming or other technologies that require ports other than HTTP port
80 to be open.
- New OpenPort property - BrowserHawk now detects whether specific ports
are open for outbound traffic (initiating from the client). For example,
to use the advanced streaming capabilities of MediaPlayer, port 1755
must be open. Now you can check in advance whether a visitor will have
trouble accessing your content. Another example is the SSL port 443 -
if this port is blocked then the user will receive an error when trying
to access your HTTPS content - not exactly what you want considering
that is usually your order page! Now you can use BH to gracefully detect
and handle the situation.
- New SSLEnabled property - BrowserHawk now checks to ensure that the
user has not disabled their SSL support in the browser (such as
unchecking the "Use SSL 2.0 / 3.0" options in the IE Advanced Security
settings). This enables you to ensure the user can communicate
successfully over HTTPS connections, before they try accessing secure
content. This property returns True if they have not disabled SSL
support in their browser, and their HTTPS port 443 is open.
- The Plugin_JavaVer property now detects the Java plug-in in IE 6.
This is especially handy given that XP does not ship with the MS JVM
installed by default, and you may need to know whether they have
installed the Java plug-in instead.
- With its rising popularity, Mozilla is now treated as its own browser,
rather than as Netscape. Extended property checks (such as disabled
settings, screen size, plugins, and connection speed) are now performed
on Mozilla browsers. Previously only IE, Netscape, and Opera browsers
were supported for extended property checks. Is your site ready for AOL
users that may be surfing with Mozilla? Use BrowserHawk to ensure these
users are not turned away unnecessarily.
- You can now programmatically access the last update date/time (BDDDate
property) and version (BDDVersion property) of the browser definition
file (BDF) currently in use.
- Improved support for personal firewall products. Some of these
products indirectly prevented BrowserHawk from executing some tests in
previous versions of BrowserHawk.
