88 per cent of Large Firms Now Recruit Online

Recent research from iLogos, has found that 88 per cent of the Global 500 companies now recruit online. The Global 500 survey included the largest companies in the world, based upon gross revenue and segmented the information by three regions: Europe, Asia-Pacific and N America.

”Since 1998, global Internet usage for recruiting purposes has expanded significantly,”said Yves Lermusiaux, president of iLogos Research, “From 29 per cent of Global 500 companies in 1998 to 88 per cent today…”

The study revealed that the largest increase in the adoption rate for Web recruiting occurred among Global 500 companies in the Asia-Pacific region, with an increase of 20 per cent over the last year, to 88 per cent of companies. European companies saw an increase in online recruiting of 10 per cent, to 83 per cent of European Global 500 companies. N America Global 500 companies saw an increase of 1 per cent, to a leading 93 per cent.
According to the report, most Global 500 companies currently incorporate Internet recruiting into their typical hiring strategy. By 2002, it is anticipated that nearly 100 per cent will be utilising the Web for recruiting, with a few late adopters coming in 2003.

The research predicts that the next opportunity will be true eHeadhunting, followed by online workforce optimisation, including such processes as skills inventorying, skills gapping and talent deployment.

Benchmarking Your Competitors’ Supply Base

An in depth knowledge of existing and potential competitors is critical to sound business and marketing planning.

Most companies would expect their own sales and marketing department to evaluate competitor strengths and weaknesses relative to product quality, service, pricing, marketing strategies, selling effectiveness and customer attitudes.

Without this market intelligence it is difficult to predict their next moves, exploit their weaknesses and undermine their strengths. Therefore, in an extremely competitive marketplace, it is often imperative that a company benchmarks how its competitors' suppliers are performing relative to its own. In fact, these differences could be the key competitive advantage that a company needs to establish a winning position in the marketplace.

For example, it is invaluable to know their names; their competitiveness; capabilities; production capacities; quality and service levels; what R&D initiatives they are involved with; their profitability; and who owns the equity in their business.

So how do you begin to measure the performance of your own supply base against your competitors’? The most difficult part is to identify who your competitors’ suppliers are. You should look for logos or names on your competitors’ products and ask potential suppliers for a list of their customers in your industry sector.
Once you have established the names of their suppliers, the next steps should be relatively easy! Visit the key suppliers that you have identified, review their website, obtain copies of their Report & Accounts, and carry out a SQA Audit. Furthermore, if the suppliers have a quality accreditation, such as QS9000 or ISO9001, they will have records (and trend data) about the quality and delivery performance to their customers.
Most importantly, follow up your visits with RFQ’s to determine their cost performance.

Compare the data with your own supplier management data, and take appropriate action, and remember to periodically repeat the process!
