Fair enough. I just got back from conferencing myself, and I know what
deailing with the e-mail deluge is like.

I use it for announcements, and I vote for closing the list to
non-subscribers:
* people making legitimate announcements will read the "you have to
subscribe first" response and go aheand and subscribe
* people spamming will just note the bounce and delete the list from
their list of hundreds of thousands or millions of targets
requiring a subscription to make an announcement is lightweight for
legit posters, and too heavy for spammers.
