[opensource] IDC US over Open Source

In het licht van het IDC-Benelux rapport over OSS in Nederland is
volgende citaat (zie ook URL) van IDC - US interessant. Zijn de
Nederlandse bedrijven inmiddels al in het stadium van 'waking up'?

QUOTE
IDC Opinion:
Does open source software have the potential to be a
disruptive technology in the software industry?

In some sense, it already is. In the area of what IDC
calls infrastructure software, Open Source software
has actually achieved significant market share. The
primary examples are Linux, Sendmail, and Apache.
Others include popular development languages like TCL
or PERL. The benefits to users include earlier
attainment of robust functionality that is achieved by
the parallel development and testing efforts of the
participating community, or "network" of contributing
developers.

Conclusion

Large corporations are waking up to the enormous
benefits of Open Source. As they do -- and they will
eventually -- they will demand it from their vendors.
If the vendors balk, they will be replaced by those
that will understand. Especially for infrastructure
software, the world will become a safer place for
computer users. For at least some classes of software,
therefore, open source software does have the
potential to be a disruptive technology.
