[Sorry, I don't know if offtopic@ is just for humorous things, or
if this question is sufficiently offtopic from kernelnewbies to justify
it here. :]

I let my laptop run out of battery while on sleep. It turns out it
doesn't do any nice suspend-to-disk things, it just dies.. Anyway, I
found some files like this:
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 24 Jan 1 1904 modules.pnpbiosmap
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 29 Jan 1 1904 modules.parportmap

How on earth did the time get set to jan 1 1904?? 1970 I could
understand.. but 1904 just baffles me. (I think I've heard excel
stores dates as offsets since jan 1 1904, but unix never seemed
to like 1904. :)

Is this an odd ppcism?

Thanks :)

Unix stores dates as a _signed_ offset since jan 1 1970.

The 2^31 bits in each direction is good for about 68 years,
up to 2038 in one direction and 1902 in the other.

I really think it's more likely to be Klez or variant. I get a variety
of such forced emails. And given some of the angry out-of-the-blue
emails I get, and since I don't exactly count as prominent, it's not
some weirdo doing it by hand for some reason, unless he's /really/
diligent ;)

Not always. Many spammers have started to harvest not just
single email addresses, but from/to address PAIRS.

This will easily circumvent even Richard Gooch's old email
filters ;)

Look on the bright side: it costs spammers a lot more this way.

Spammers send big lists of names to relays, which costs O(N)
bandwidth and other resources... a very low O(N), since they
are bundled together. With this pair system, it becomes harder
(more expensive) to batch things up. [Is this a fair assessment?
Or is one-to-one spamming low-cost nowadays?]

I guess they might start finding a vertex cover (i.e. the minimal
set of vertices such that the union of those vertex neighbourhoods
== the set of all vertices) That looks NP-complete to me, but you
can probably approximate it enough to make it efficient. So maybe
there is no bright side :(

Has anyone seen this in the wild?

Cheers,
Andrew

This is one of the reasons why spammers are depending less on
open relays and more on open proxies and cracked boxes nowadays.

Some spammers have even spread around worms to automatically open
up root (well, Admini~r) holes on machines, or just installing
programs to automagically spread their spam.

> Has anyone seen this in the wild?

Yes. I've already gotten spam "from":
- myself, various addresses (ha, but I'm not going to blacklist me)
- bill davidson
- stephen tweedie
- ben lahaise
- various other lkml inhabitants

I just don't get it.. I undertand avoiding detection by hosting
intermediate pages on dialup.. I understand obfuscated links to real
pages. But I just don't understand why in the hell anyone would avoid a
spam filter and email the exact sort of person who could cause them major
headachs.

But then If Alan Ralsky is any indicator they think they are
invincable though I don't understand that attitude either considering how
many privacy options are enabled on his cell phone.

Rule #3, spammers are stupid.

Last month Alan Ralsky even did an interview with msnbc:

Some reactions from the SPAM-L mailing list:

My dislike for Ralsy is personal.. he convinced my former employer to do
the credit card processing and develop porn sites for him. Dumbass
copletely revamped his buisness for Ralsky. I quit, changed my cell
numnber(yes he had it) and handed all Ralsky's private(real) isp info over
to the anti spam groups along with details of the half proxy trick he was
using to accept connections from panama but reply from the faster isp
in the US.

Between Leo and Ralsky a major Canadian isp was forced to change their
spam policies.

PS I think 30 million is a low estimate he sent more than that just on the
co owned sites with 2K Services.

Ah, good idea. But, doesn't that make it very illegal, and make
them easy targets for police? (Presumebly, there's some way
of contacting them, since they want money, and the money/information
has to flow SOMEHOW to them... so the police flow the same way. Unless
the information [credit card #s] just spreads to everyone)

Have you had spam sent to you and say, ben, bill and sct, with all of
you in the To field? Perhaps they use BCC? (I've seen a bit of this)

Cheers,
Andrew
