That is completely different. For GNOME, you actually _have_ to
install everything, since you cannot even run text-mode apps without
having ImLib installed. 

With Mnemonic, there sure are many packages, but you can grab _only_
those that you need (ie. you can forget about mnemonic-oil-gtkclient
if you are happy with mnemonic-oil-cursesclient (which currently
doesn't exist, but you get the point)).

That's pointless, since it divides them up according to the wrong
scheme. You could envisage a split in

  mnemonic-core

and

  mnemonic-lib-tcpconnection, mnemonic-lib-url,
  mnemonic-oil-httphander, mnemonic-lib-ftphandler

and

  mnemonic-lib-layout, mnemonic-lib-gtklayout, 
  mnemonic-lib-gtkclient

as that at least keeps functionality grouped. But I also think that
this is wrong and ignoring the modular structure.
