Multiple makefiles is fine with me (I want that too), but I think even
with gtk, there is only one configure script which detects all
dependencies once, instead of over and over.  That makes it easier to find
out what parameters the configure script accepts, such as
--with-glib-prefix in the case of gtk. 

The one configure script would still generate all the makefiles for each
directory.  I didn't mean to have one makefile for everything.
