I think it is better to use gtk-- yes.

There are plans to make a C++ wrapper for the gdk and gnome
libraries. Just read about it today on the gtk list. But I don't think
you have to use gtk in order to use gdk. Can't you call the gdk
C-function from C++ and for the gtk stuff use gtk--?
