Re: linux and utf-8
Thanks everybody for your input.
1) I'm downloading the SuSE 9.2 dvd iso right now... The 9.0 works pretty well
with utf-8, except for the keymap switching, but I really don't mind clicking.
Please forgive my ignorance, but what are <meta>, <compose>, <win>, .. keys?
Sounds like X jargon.
[I'm not too clear on how the keymap fits into the input stream. I know it
translates keysyms into characters, but I'm not sure how the shortcuts switch
the keymaps.]
2) I'll give fedora a try too.
3) As for Debian, I haven't had time to trim it... I have 8 cds (the readme
says I should have 7), but there are 2 cd 1's, a US and a non-US (and 2 update
cds). The system installs from either; I can't tell the difference. It looks
like I'll have to install the packages by hand -- a daunting project. The
unicode doesn't seem to work using the installation procedure alone.
This is my first Linux box and I'm having a great time.
All comments/incouragement welcome.
Thanks.
