It is horizontal, top-to-bottom, or horizontal, bottom-to-top?  I've heard
of horizontal, bottom-to-top for limited embedding in Latin script text.

Is a it a new invention adopted for independent reasons, or a concession
to use the script on Latin(script)-based technology?

Wasn't the concern about the size of a font that would have to be fit
into the kernel (if that is still an issue)?
