Wouldn't it be more appropriate if a team of people who would
actually use this extension designed an API or interface?

First, somebody is going to have to design it, then implement it,
preferably in a standard console system (i.e. Linux or *BSD), then
we can worry about getting everyone to use it, once we have a working
design.
