unicode and XFree

Thanks everyone for their previous help. I have now got both XFree
4.0.2 and glibc 2.2 installed, have set up en_GB.UTF-8 locale, and
am able to assign Unicode charaters to the keyboard under X and
input them directly into xterm; it works very nicely. However, when I
examined the behaviour using xev, I have noticed that
XLookupString returns an empty string for my Hebrew Unicode
characters. I first thought it was due to the English locale, but I get
the same result for X running under he_IL.UTF-8 (both when I use
the X symbols such as hebrew_aleph and the Unicode value +
0x01000000).

As a result, while I can feed Unicode characters directly into xterm,
I am unable to do so for other applications, such as Yudit. Is this
due to some misconfiguration of XFree on my behalf, or is this
normal behaviour?

Thanks in advance
