This is indeed an important property which should be maintained.
So using "pure Unicode" library functions is not the appropriate
solution here, I think.
(Just as with my editor mined which is transparent with respect to
illegal UTF-8 sequences (and other binary stuff) - announcement of
the next release will follow soon, by the way.)
