No doubt!  Thanks for the helpful tips, just what I was looking for from
this mailing list (that I only heard about yesterday).

I'll post again when I have a version that is more robust when encountering
illegal UTF-8 sequences.  In the meantime, I hope it's a step in the right
direction and will prove useful.

(No comments from anybody on the "Level 1" issue?  This seems to be a
touchy topic, and one that most often comes when dealing with Unicode in
text-oriented and/or telecommunications setting, like Linux, Plan 9, or
Kermit.)
