I don't think this problem has been solved.  The GScript project aims
to solve it, but nobody has written a back end which works like this
yet.  I think that is still on the to-do list.

For those who don't know, GScript is a Unicode rendering library.  It
will implement the full BiDi algorithm plus, I believe,
locale-specific stuff.  My (limited) understanding is that it is
fairly toolkit-independent, but it is being written in the context of
Gtk+ and Gnome.  Owen Taylor <otaylor@redhat.com> is the primary author.
