1GB and HIGHMEM with 2.4.20 (fwd)

OK,

I tried the following:

"mem=768M" eliminates all of the problems, but is unsatisfactory
nevertheless. Interestiung enough, "mem=896M", "highmem=0" or other
options do not lead to any enhancements.

"mem=768M" seems to be the only parameter that works. I am well inclined
to put the blame e.g. on the NVIDIA driver. Is there anything known about
it?
