Allocating more than 1GB

Hi,
	i'm facing the problem that a program trying to allocate more than
~950MB (cumulative) space
	fails.

	I understand from
http://mail.nl.linux.org/linux-mm/2000-07/msg00001.html
	that it is (or was) a problem with memory mapping scheme.

	The question is: 
		can the problem be worked around without relinking the
program (linking the program statically is absolutely impossible)?
