Re: Rescue mode
One way nobody has mentioned yet is to have two root partitions, one the
normal one and one rescue one. You then have a script on bootup which runs
lilo to set up the rescue partition as the default boot partition, and
another on shutdown which sets the normal root partition as the default
boot partition. The rescue partition is packed with clever scripts which
are able to automatically reconstruct the main root partition, even to the
extent of formatting it and reinstalling from a backup if necessary
(obviously you have to have a regular automatic backup strategy in
operation). This isn't any good though if the kernel never boots because
of something you've messed up though, only if it crashes while unattended
(a watchdog timer is needed too, to make it really useful).
