Define "failed".

OK, so let's define failed as "magic key was pressed at boot".
LILO will happily catch this and modify it's behaviour accordingly.
Go set it up that way if you like.

Define "successful configuration change".
Given a definition, I am sure you can easily implement a method to copy
whatever you consider to be the necessary configuration information to
wherever LILO knows to look for it.
Then suggest it to your distro maker.
Now perhaps you could explain to us what manner of kernel support you feel
is appropriate for what you are proposing?
Alternately, you could just post about something kernel-related instead.
