For me, a HA database is located on a *stable* box with a RAID-5 array and
a UPS. If it doesn't crash, you don't need committed writes and suchlike.

Same here -- if the box doesn't crash in the first place, you don't need a
fast fsck. ;-)
I don't want to start this particular religious war, but there really _are_
two sides to these issues. :-/

You need more than the console gives you, you do it in software. "screen"
shows you how to do that.
