Hallo!

I am running gentoo on encrypted root [system A] and storing data on
encrypted raid1; everything was fine untill two weeks ago I began to
leave my PC on for night. The problem is that it hangs completely with
no messages in /var/log/messages (freezes immediately after some hours
operating) and I have no idea what exactly is wrong. Hangs are random.

What I have done already:
1. tested memory for 8 hours - no errors.
2. suspected my own kernel configuration, copied my gentoo to
non-encrypted partition, recompiled same kernel with same .config, using
genkernel [system B]. Tested it for nearly 24hours - no hang. Other
differences between those 2 systems:
 ______________________A, B
kernel compile method: manually, genkernel using same .config
kernel startup: initrd.gz, initramfs created by
genkernel
    raid1: yes, no

kernel version: 2.6.22-gentoo-sources-r9

Turns out, that most likely there is problem with loop-aes. Or not as
likely - with raid1.
I can send my configurations and other information, but I need advice to
further localize the problem!

nope. i can't try a raid1 setup on that machine but have you tried a
gentoo mailinglist/forum? kernel folks tend to be sensitive towards
vendor stuff.

i'm using a stock slackware 21.5 kernel (monolithic) and tend to
blame it being non-customized. upgrading to a recent 2.6.23 kernel is
on my list still, tho.

I also turned off raid1, but system with encrypted root was frozen this
morning. :(
Probably gentoo-sources kernel has some incompatibility, I'll ask in
gentoo lists too. How could loop-aes make a problem like this?

1. Initial state of system: gentoo-sources-2.6.22-r5 running on
loop-AESv3.2a (no earlier versions before) encrypted root, AES128,
multi-key-v3 - installed by README with loop-aes. [problem exists already]
2. I compile new kernel:

emerge -av gentoo-sources [y, enter]
eselect kernel list
eselect kernel set n (n from list)

cd /usr/src/linux-2.6.22-gentoo-r9
make menuconfig [load old config, make some changes, save new config]
cp /path/to/new/config /usr/src/linux-2.6.22-gentoo-r9/.config
make
make modules_install
cp ./arch/i386/boot/bzImage /path/to/boot/partition/ker
cd /path/to/boot/partition
mkdir modules-2.6.22-gentoo-r9

3. uncompress loop-AESv3.2b

4. compile loop-aes module:

(I wanted to rebuild dietlibc etc, but it did not suceeded and I assumed,
that there is no need to recompile it. Is this wrong?)

cd /path/to/loop-aes
make clean
make LINUX_SRC=/usr/src/linux-2.6.22-gentoo-r9 KBUILD_OUTPUT=/usr/src/linux-
2.6.22-gentoo-r9 KEYSCRUB=y
make tests [ok]
cp /lib/modules/linux-2.6.22-gentoo-r9/extra/loop.ko
/path/to/boot/partition/modules-2.6.22-gentoo-r9

5. update syslinux.cfg to boot new kernel.

6. successful reboot.

That is how I did it. I cannot send you kernel configuration now, but looks
like the problem is not there. However, (in my opinion) it is kernel related
(not hardware, not userspace apps) - else - why there are no messages in
/var/log/messages.

I will be glad to only find myself wrong - thanks to Jari!
Soon I will make a (hopefully correct) recompile considering all advices.
However, I still have some more questions:
1. when I have to recompile gpg, dietlibc and linux-utils?
2. was that insufficient to run "make mrproper" instead of "make distclean"
(I forgot to write it in last mail)?

Hi,

I've setup a RAID1 + LoopAES system on a Gentoo box using my own kernel (
2.6.23) patched with loopaes only.

The box is not high end hardware but enough to sustain the load (AMD Sempron
3100+, 1GB RAM).

The disks are Hitachi 500GB SATA HDT725050VLA380 connected to a PCI SATA
controler using a SiliconImage SI3512 chip.

Some months ago, I tested LUKS with encrypted root on my own desktop (Ubuntu
Feisty at that time and a plain disk, no RAID) and the only real drawback I
had was the concurrent access which was a performance killer... A simple dd
if=/dev/sda of=/dev/null in background made quite "impossible" to load
firefox and browse the net at the same time, or using any other tool. All
I/O seemed block until I stopped DD.

Then, I read a lot of articles and came up to try LoopAES which was supposed
to perform better, performance and security wise, and it does at least on
the CPU usage side.

So, I ssh to the Gentoo box, launch screen to have multiple "consoles" and
start to fill the disk with my backup data using :

ssh root@backupserver "cd / ; tar -c -f - list_of_backupable_dirs" | tar -x
-f -

Everything runs smooth and seems to be quite fast. Then I create a new login
shell with screen (Ctrl+a c) and.. wow... it's SLOW... then I launch
midnight commander and start browsing the filesystem.. Incredible how slow
this can be.

Reading thoroughly loopaes.README, I switch the IO Scheduler to deadline and
tried again all that stuff. Deadline improved a bit the responsiveness but
not that much. Yes, that's better than Anticipatory but still very slow
compared to normal operations.

The purpose of the Gentoo box is to become the future mail server as well as
file server for our small company. Even with high performance SMTP and IMAP
servers such as Postfix and Cyrus/Dovecot, it'll imply quite a lot of
concurrent accesses.

So the question : Is that normal behaviour or did I missed something ?

I've read a lot of articles from the archive and I don't remember reading
people complaining about concurrent access troubles.

Here is some (maybe?) useful info :

root@server # losetup /dev/loop0
/dev/loop0: [0001]:299 (/dev/md0) encryption=AES128 multi-key-v3

root@server # cat /proc/mdstat

I'm on a Sempron system as well, using full encryption (root +
external discs).

That being said, your box behaves strangely. I guess it cannot be
attributed to loop-AES or dm-crypt at all.

I experienced a similar sort of timeout whilst using the main HD and
an optical drive on the same IDE controller channel (master+slave
both present). Unfortunately I cannot tell you which hardware I
exactly used, it was a PATA only system. And the strange delays went
away when I switched to one drive per IDE channel.

That being said for the record, your problem seems to be of a
trickier sort. Did you test all this with an unencrypted system?

I've been using fully encrypted systems for quite some time now for
quite some setups and your report really is news to me.

Well, when I tested dm-crypt on my own desktop and found this concurrent
access issue, I read a lot about it and it seemed related to a bad handling
in dm-crypt using blocking I/O to ensure that encrypted data really was
commited to disks at all times. So finally, I wasn't that surprised by the
dm-crypt behaviour.

I really thought LoopAES wouldn't be affected by such behaviour because of a
really different design so I wanted to test it in a real world situation.

The only thing I can think of is the way disks are connected. The
SiliconImage SI3512 chip is on a PCI card having 2 SATA connectors. As the
RAID configuration is done at kernel level, a single write on /dev/md0 is
sent twice over the wire to reach both disks (RAID1 with 2 disks).

33MHz PCI is limited to 133MB/s bandwidth and according to the hdparm values
I gave in the first message, full disk speed x 2 would saturate the PCI bus
for unencrypted operation and would nearly saturate it for LoopAES encrypted
operation.

Maybe this is just the problem... The motherboard (Asus K8V-X) internal SATA
controler does not recognise the Hitachi 500GB disks at boot, hence the use
of a more modern chip on a separate PCI card. Also, this motherboard doesn't
feature PCI-E bus/slots.

My own Desktop is full PCI-E with 6 SATA connectors so I'll find some time
to test the setup as-is with my motherboard and see, this time, if I still
get the concurrent access troubles.

Unfortunately no.. but if my previous guess is right, I should too face the
concurrent access problem.

News to me too because I really did not find any report of such behaviour in
the ML archive.

Problem is still not really solved, however, there is quite big
probability, that some network module or USB modem module is to blame.
It takes too long, too wait for hang, so it is not easy to determine
what causes it by experimenting with excluding something.
I compiled new kernel as Jari wrote (kernel image is called "jari"
now!), but that was not a problem (or not the only problem).

My question is: how to locate a problem, if it is in kernel or module?
If you have some useful link, please post it here!

Hi!

Today I tried to boot IBM T42 from USB stick, but it didn't suceeded.
Perhaps I had to put in a stick before configuring BIOS, not after, but
who knows.
Please give me known-to-work combinations of IBM ThinkPad and USB stick
models, if you know some! Did you experienced problems with some
particular USB stick models?
\I tried it with syslinux, but I'm not sure, if things went that far\

Colosenses 1: 14 - Hebreos 9: 22 - Lev=EDtico 17: 11).

"Porque la sangre de Jesucristo su Hijo nos limpia de todo pecado" (1 Juan

Clavado en la cruz, desangr=E1ndose a=FAn por nuestros pecados, el Creador =

Desde entonces, toda persona que recibe el sacrificio del Cordero de Dios
(Jesucristo) por completo y suficiente, Dios lo adopta amorosamente por
hijo, y le da vida eterna en el reino de los cielos (Juan 1: 29 - Juan 1:

******************************************************* *

*HIS PRECIOUS BLOOD*

Not with all the value of the indulgences, deeds, sacrifices and offerings
of the most famous religions could ever be bought one single, eternal soul
for heaven (Mark 8: 36).

But the five or six liters of the precious blood that God the Son made man,
shed on the cross, dying in our place, were enough to clean potentially the
sins of all mankind (Matthew 26: 28 =96 Colossians 1: 14 =96 Hebrews 9: 22 =
=96
Leviticus 17: 11).

"*Because the blood of Jesus Christ, His Son, purifies us from all sin *" (=
1
John 1: 17).

Nailed on the cross, bleeding for our sins, the Creator of the universe,
took upon himself the sins of all =96 (" *for all have sinned, and come sho=
rt
of the glory of God*." Romans 3: 23), says: "It is finished" - mission
accomplished - (John 19: 30).

In this way He paid our debt with His precious blood, and he puts at our
disposal the reconciliation with God the Father (1 Peter 1: 18, 19 =96 Hebr=
ews
10: 10, 14 =96 2 Corinthians 5: 18, 19 =96 Romans 5: 9 - 11 =96 Colossians =
1: 20 -
22).

Since then, every person that receives the sacrifice of the Lamb of God
(Jesus Christ) as complete and sufficient, God adopts him lovingly as a son=
,
and gives him eternal life in the kingdom of heaven (John 1: 29 =96 John 1=
:
12).

Maybe you cannot understand so much love from Him, however, it is a fact
that " *God (the Father) so loved the world, that He gave us His one and
only Son (Jesus, God the Son) that whoever (you) believes in Him, shall not
perish (in hell), but have eternal life (in heaven)" (John 3: 16). *

Beloved reader, He opened the doors of heaven for you on the cross of
Golgotha! (John 14: 2). Will you stay outside? (Revelation 21: 27) Or will
you believe in the word of Jesus? He said: *"** And it shall come to pass,
that whosoever shall call on the name** of the Lord shall be saved* *" (Act=
s
2: 21).*

With sincerity, say your own prayer, or pray like this:

*Lord Jesus, I confess with my mouth that You are the Lord, and I believe i=
n
my heart that God raised You from the dead *(Romans 10: 9, 10).

* *

*And I proclaim myself saved by faith, for you said I would be *(Ephesians
2: 8, 9). *You are God, and you don't lie* (Numbers 23: 19).

*I now that I am a sinner, and I repent and I confess you that I need your
salvation and forgiveness **(1 John 1: 9)** . Please, forgive me and save
me. From now I receive you as my personal **Saviour* *and I make you my
Lord. *

* *

*My God and my Lord Jesus Christ, thank you for having shed your precious
blood and had died for me. **I believe that after three days you resurrecte=
d
for my justification, and later ascended to heaven, where you always
intercede for me before the Father *(Romans 4: 25 =96 Luke 24: 6, 7, 51 =96=
 1
Corinthians 15: 3, 4 =96 Hebrews 7: 25)* . ***

*Please, help me to be faithful until the end. Amen. ***

*Read the Bible to be wise, believe it to be saved and practice it to be
holy. *

*Join a Christian church, where the authority is the Bible and Jesus Christ
is preached.*

I have only debugged the kernel in the old fashioned way myself, but gdb
is able to attach itself to a running kernel. You can also patch the
kernel with kdb (kernel debugger), that will help gdb to get out more
useful info (and some serial console stuff it seems).

To debug after the crash is called "post mortem debugging", and a google
search together with 'linux kernel' give some pointers to tools for
doing that.

Hello Jan!

I´m glad you asked! Booting from USB storage is my thing ;-)
Since 2004 I´ve been using a Socket 754 Mainboard from MSI which supports booting from usb devices.
As not all mainboards support this, my advice is:
1. Look on manufacturers´ web sites for the documentation of their mainboards.
2. In case you are faced with existing hardware you should plug in the usb stick/drive and then turn on the machine.
3. Take a look on the BIOS setup with usb device attached. Can it be selected as boot device?
4. Some BIOSes feature functions like "legacy device" which means usb devices (i.e. storage) becomes available to old OSes like DOS. Enable such "legacy" modes!
5. Some BIOSes list usb-zip/usb-hd/usb-floppy. Take a try...

When the PC starts, check if the indicator LED of your usb stick does something. Does the PC try to find a bootloader?

A word on models/hardware:
All sticks were the same so far. Older usb 1.1 models are slower than usb 2.0 but do the same job anyway. The easiest way to get it done is syslinux! Prepare the usb-stick as described in loop-aes readme and you get a stick with bootloader and kernel on it.
If you want more, try grub. I never used that but it should work, too. Of course, using flash card readers works also. The ugly thing her is: multi-slot card readers most often use the compact flash slot to start from! I got a newer model that uses the SD-slot :-) Such things remain undocumented, you need to try. The benefit of using micro-SD cards is the ability to destroy them in your hands while someone attacks your privacy. It´s less likely your being tortured once your keys are *physically* broken.

I´d be happy to read about your advances!

Kind regards,
Peter
