Hi

Today i had the "problem" that i wanted to create an AES256 Keyfile for
loop-aes. According to README a SHA512 Hash is used to generate the
encryption key.

Taking aside the fact halve the bits aren't really put to use here,
SHA512 still means 64 Byte of raw entropy.

The "standard" example only(tm) gives 45 bytes of entropy, so i thought
about how i can create random passwords with definable length, only
using standard unix tools.

So i stumbled over the "openssl" executable and it's many options. Which
i think sould be available on many systems.

With `openssl enc -base64 -A` you can create base64 encoded strings with
arbitrary length. So with a little loop around that you can create
key-files with arbitrary sized lines.

- snip -
for dat in `seq 1 65`; do head -c 90 /dev/random | openssl enc -base64 -A ; echo ; done | gpg --symmetric -a >/a/usbstick/keyfile.gpg
- snip -
90 bytes of entrophy or 120 chars per line in this example.

I think this is also a bit more elegant than the `head`ing and `tail`ing
in the README.

Hi,

I'm in the process of tinkering with slackware 12.0 and found a nasty
pitfall. While 11.0 used "uuencode (GNU sharutils) 4.6.3", slackware
12.0 uses "uuencode - GMime 2.2.9"

The difference between those two is the length of output lines:

KvmUf1QL24tMm2WqNBngufef05ggcrePvKUj/InniYpWkkGvvVSWaD23PfjP

of GNU sharutils, and=20

tC22uMJKMY1Rnun/EptRojfTdeURMgF4ny/2Mne06sYOag5sSEgWE+BC6UM/yuDjRI0LOxg4otDu

of GMime 2.2.9

This broke several scripts on my system which relied on the length of
output lines of GNU sharutils uuencode. Among them, the examples of
loop-aes.readme

As workaround for creating loop-aes v3 keys on systems with
GMime-uuencode you can use instead

openssl rand -base64 3120 | head -n 66 | tail -n 65 | gpg ...

gpg --gen-random 1 3120 | openssl enc -base64 | gpg ...

head -c 3120 /dev/random | openssl enc -base64 | gpg ...

--=20

Thanks for reporting this.

gmime-2.2.9 version of uuencode still appears to be little bit goofy because
it appears to output empty "encoded" line if input data is integer multiple
of 57 bytes.

It is also possible to feed more random data to uuencode, because that
'head -n 66 | tail -n 65' will chop off extra unwanted lines. This works
for both versions of uuencode:

head -c 3705 /dev/random | uuencode -m - | head -n 66 | tail -n 65 \
    | gpg --symmetric -a >/a/usbstick/keyfile.gpg

2925 == 65 lines * 45 bytes of unencoded raw data
3705 == 65 lines * 57 bytes of unencoded raw data

Hallo,

I tried to set up loop-AES-v3.2a and when executing

    bzip2 -d -c util-linux-2.12r.tar.bz2 | tar xvf -
    cd util-linux-2.12r
    patch -p1 </PATH/TO/LOOP-AES/util-linux-2.12r.diff
    CFLAGS=-O2 ./configure

util-linux output was: You need -lcrypt. I continued with installing,
but "make tests" failed, because there was no /dev/loop7!

So, how to get -lcrypt and what is it? Will it solve problem with loop7?

..

On Debian, it belongs to the libc6-dev package. If you don't use Debian,
there's probably a similar package for your distribution.

No idea about loop7 - try it and see, I think. :-)

I'm using ubuntu. The bad news for me are: libc6 & libc6-dev were
already there before installing.
Looks like I am stuck with installing AES (I recompiled ubuntu kernel
2.6.17.14, followed AES readme)... I will let you know, if I find a
solution.

PS: I hope that's not a problem, if I answer private posts back to list?

Your distro's init scripts and/or udev scripts are supposed to create that
device node. You can also create those device nodes manually, like this:

#/bin/sh
for x in 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7; do mknod -m 660 /dev/loop${x} b 7 ${x}; done

Debian has a package "apt-file" and as Ubuntu is based on Debian it
may have that package too.

After installing it and "apt-file update"ing once you can 'apt-file search'
for all packages containing the specified file.

In case Ubuntu has broken down the packages differently you should be
able to find it that way.

Ups.
And i wondered why my posting didn't turn up on the maillinglist.

I'm using mutt for writing e-mail only since a few days ago when the
last release introduced the feature to send mails to a specified
SMTP-Server. (Up to that release the local MTA had to be configured
right. So i used Thunderbird to actually write my mails as i never found
out how to configure a Smart-Host that requires SMTP-Auth)

To make a long story short, i accidentally press 'reply' instead of
'group reply'. :-)

Hi,

The question of loop-aes + swsusp has come up multiple times over the
years, but not for a while. By that I mean, suspending a loop-aes-
encrypted-root system to a loop-aes encrypted swap partition, which is
reinstated by the initrd prior to resuming. Jari points out problems
w/this in:

    http://marc.info/?l=linux-crypto&m=117497724023950&w=2

It looks like Jari had just updated loop-aes to make it compatible with
swsusp in general (in release 2.0f), but there were still problems doing
encrypted root + swsusp. Has anybody done any further work on this,
like the initrd changes that might make it come together? Jari, do you
think that such initrd tweaks as you suggested then, would be enough to
make it work, or are there in fact other reasons why this may not be
doable?

Thanks,

Hank Leininger <hlein@progressive-comp.com>

You can look at a sample at:
http://wiki.tuxonice.net/EncryptedSwapAndRoot

It uses suspend2 but can easily be converted to swsusp...
All you have to do is modify f_suspend2_resume behavior.
If you do, please send me a patch.

Best Regards,
Alon Bar-Lev.

Well...
I've updated the code.
Now it supports wswsusp.

Enjoy.

I quickly looked at Alon Bar-Lev's page at

 http://wiki.tuxonice.net/EncryptedSwapAndRoot

and it appears to do the right thing. My earlier comments about problems
arising out of mounting a "permanent-storage-device" prior to to resume,
seem to be completely avoided by Alon Bar-Lev's script. That is because it
appears to mount RAM disk only, and any "changes" to such RAM based device
vanish on resume. So no inconsistency between RAM-after-resume and
"permanent-storage-device" can occour.

The initrd created by loop-AES' build-initrd.sh script needs to mount a
"permanent-storage-device" to load programs that were intentionally omitted
from initrd. The reason why it was done like that was to make the initrd as
small as possible and also make it kernel version independent. At least on
some setups the RAM occupied by initrd can't be freed, so making initrd
small was really RAM saving feature.

Does anyone have any idea how big that initramfs is that contains by Alon
Bar-Lev's script and other needed programs+bits. And also, is that RAM
free-able?

Well... Mine is 7905204 bytes... But I have a lot of stuff out
there... Such as gnupg-2+agent, pkcs11-data, pcsc-lite, smartcard
provider, splash and many others.

The minimum requirement is busybox, gnupg-1 (static), losetup and
aespipe, this results in a very small initramfs.

As I understand, removing files from the initramfs also free the
memory acquired by the files. Busybox's switch_root is doing exactly
this.

Alon.

Hi everybody in list!

I was trying to recompile kernel for setting up root encryption - after
copying ubuntu kernel config. and setting some kernel options following
loop-AES readme (you can see them at the end of this mail), it ended up
with kernel panic.
{ Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on
unknown-block(0,0) }
What could be wrong?

"All kernel subsystems needed by root file system (IDE drivers,
ext2/ext3/reiserfs/whatever) must be compiled directly into kernel."
- which kernel parameters make this real? How to find them?

Hello

I would like to encrypt most of my file server. To do this I thought I
would place logical volumes on top of loop-aes. This is where I've got
to:
#losetup -K /mnt/keys/keyfile.gpg /dev/loop3 /dev/hda6
#pvcreate /dev/loop3
Physical volume "/dev/loop3" successfully created
#vgcreate vg /dev/loop3
Found duplicate PV SO5CgPDJuTwi8LFh7x7N4qqCaEU70hJ9: using /dev/hda6
not /dev/loop3 Found duplicate PV SO5CgPDJuTwi8LFh7x7N4qqCaEU70hJ9:
using /dev/loop3 not /dev/hda6 Found duplicate PV
SO5CgPDJuTwi8LFh7x7N4qqCaEU70hJ9: using /dev/hda6 not /dev/loop3 Found
duplicate PV SO5CgPDJuTwi8LFh7x7N4qqCaEU70hJ9: using /dev/loop3
not /dev/hda6 Volume group "vg" successfully created

Well, that looks ugly to me. There is something I'm not doing
correctly here. I know this is a vague question but, do you have any
pointers as to whether and how LVM2 logical volumes should be
established on loop-aes loop devices?

Thanks for reading.

Regards

Fog_Watch.

See, my nose was about two millimetres away from the screen and I
couldn't see what I was doing.
#losetup -K /mnt/keys/keyfile.gpg -e AES256 /dev/loop3 /dev/hda6
was a better option.

I'll press on with this encryption thing.

not really. but since you are so eager to provide as little
information as possible ;P about your setup it's mere speculation.

It should boot all the way to "Password:" prompt. When wrong passphrase is
entered, it should complain about not being able to decrypt the key file.
When correct passphrase is entered, it should complain about mount failing.
Mount fails because unencrypted file system data decrypts to nonsense that
mount doesn't understand at all. Unencrypted file system data is not damaged
by this kind of experiment.

Please provide more information about your setup:
1) bootloader configuration
2) build-initrd.sh configuration
3) full kernel configuration, compressed
4) /etc/fstab contents
5) what device you are trying to boot from?

Without above information, it is difficult to say what is wrong.
