Hello to all.

I burn in windows several cd and dvd, encrypted with crosscrypt
filedisk, AES256 but i can't mount any in my fedora core 3. I always
get an "ioctl: LOOP_SET_STATUS: Invalid argument" error.

  kernel version: (uname -a)
Linux core3.mydomain 2.6.9-1.667 #1 Tue Nov 2 14:41:25 EST 2004 i686
i686 i386 GNU/Linux

    How i encrypt:
filedisk /encrypt plain.iso crypt.iso
/aes256:some.long.password.with.more.than.20.char

How i try to setup the loopback device
[root@core3 mnt]# losetup -e AES256 /dev/loop0 /dev/hdb
Password:
ioctl: LOOP_SET_STATUS: Invalid argument

    Feedback with dmesg:
lp0: console ready
FAT: invalid media value (0xc2)
VFS: Can't find a valid FAT filesystem on dev hdb.
loop: loaded (max 8 devices)

I also check the kernel modules, and all is OK. I also install a
new kernel, and re-compile with all loopback support enable

What can i do? what I'm missing?

                               Thanks,

                                   Pedro

Assuming /dev/hdb is the cd you burned from crypt.iso,
perhaps I'm missing something but I'm not sure that
losetup line is the correct way to set up a loop
device from an encrypted cd? dmesg says it's looking
for a FAT filesystem.

Does the one-step mount line as per the README work?

loop-aes definitely can mount encrypted CD/DVD usind FAT, EXT2/3 or other
filesystems
I am not sure if it works with crosscrypted isos, too!

That looks the loop device is setup wrong. You don´t need a keyfile or
passwordfile (-K or -p)?
If crosscrypt doesn´t work, i.e. is incompatiple with v3 format of loop-aes
you can still encrypt CD/DVD images with linux.
Anyway, let me know if crosscrypt is really compatible with loop-aes!

Hi all,

I have been experimenting a little bit with loop-AES and a 200GB Maxtor
disk. I have made a partition (formatted with reiserfs 3.6) /dev/hda1
(200GB) and encrypted it with loop-AES 3.0b (AES256), multi-key. I have
Samba sharing it, so I can use it on my Windows machine over the
network. All this works just fine, but after some time I can get an
error message in Windows saying that there is an I/O error on the
device. I get this when I try to copy/use/move a file on the partition.
I have tried to access the file in Linux too, but then I just get
"permission denied" even if I'm root.

Running fsck on the loop-device finds corrupt files and tells me that
the only way to fix this is to run --rebuild-tree. I tried this once,
but that just didn't work resulting in a totally corrupt filesystem.

I read in the loop-AES README-file that write cache should be disabled.
I have hdparm -W 0 /dev/hda in rc.local (should it be here?), but I'm
not sure how to check if this is actually turned off after booting. Is
this the way to turn off write caching? Something else I should disable?

Anyway, I have tried a couple of times to re-format and setup the
encryption on the disk; always resulting in the same problem after some
time of usage. The last thing I tried was to partition the disk into two
partitions 100GB each. I copied files to the partitions. /dev/hda1 was
okey when I ran fsck on it. Then when I ran fsck on /dev/hda2 I
encountered some corruptions. I thought I could just copy over the files
from /dev/hda2 to /dev/hda1 and just leaving the corrupt ones. This
seemed to work, but after the copying, when I ran fsck on /dev/hda1 it
contained corrupt files as well. Even if there was only one files, which
was corrupt on /dev/hda2 (this was not copied to /dev/hda1).

Does anyone have any ideas what might be wrong in my setup? I can supply
you with additional information if you need, because I'm not sure what
might be useful to know.

Lastly, I mount the disks manually with:
losetup -e AES256 -K /path/to/enc.key /dev/loop6 /dev/hda1
mount /dev/looop6 /mnt/disk1

and unmount with:
umount /mnt/disk1
losetup -d /dev/loop6

Just recently I realized that it might be good to do the fsck too, but
I'm not sure at which point this should be done. As I have it now, I
have a script which automatically sets up the loop, fscks the partition
and mounts it. Is this a good approach or when should you fsck the
partition? What about unmounting the disks, should something special be
done or is umount /mnt/disk1 && losetup -d /dev/loop6 enough?

I would appreciate any kind of help in this matter, because it is really
bugging me to always get corrupt partitions after some time of usage.

Thanks for a great mailing list!

Best regards,
Tommy

Any kernel error messages? Use 'dmesg' command to display them.

Disabling write cache only helps in unexpected electrical power lost
situations. UPS powered boxes with automatic shutdown are better off with
write cache enabled.

hdparm -I /dev/hda

Yes.

Can you rule out RAM problems?
Does memtest86 run ok?
Is this on brand new computer?

Kernel version?
gcc version?
ATA chipset info? Some Silicon Image SATA controllers are really bad.

I recommend that mount is used to set up the loop by passing loop=
encryption= and gpgkey= mount options. That way umount will detach the loop
automatically on automatic UPS-battery-running-out-of-juice shutdown.

Fsck can be run manually if needed (after unclean shutdown).

> done or is umount /mnt/disk1 && losetup -d /dev/loop6 enough?

That is enough.

Current version does not use via cpu crypto instructions. Adding support is
not a big job, but I need either (1) fully tested patch from someone else or
(2) normal-user ssh access to a box with such cpu.

Hi,

Thanks for the quick reply! I'll try to give some answers to the questions.

This is what is logged in dmesg when I tried to chmod the corrupt file
(actually I did a chmod -R to see which files were corrupt)

ReiserFS: warning: is_tree_node: node level 35571 does not match to the
expected one 1
ReiserFS: loop4: warning: vs-5150: search_by_key: invalid format found
in block 3014659. Fsck?
ReiserFS: loop4: warning: vs-13070: reiserfs_read_locked_inode: i/o

I have not tried to run memtest for a while, but the server has been in
use for quite some time as a firewall. I just connected the disk to it
to test loop-AES. But, I would say for 99% that the memory is okey. I
tested it when I got the server. It is an old IBM with two PII/333MHz.
Nothing special. Anyway, I wouldn't think that this is the problem,
because I have had the same problem in another machine, a PIII.

This is from dmesg:

PDC20262: IDE controller at PCI slot 0000:00:0d.0
PDC20262: chipset revision 1
PDC20262: 100% native mode on irq 16
PDC20262: (U)DMA Burst Bit ENABLED Primary PCI Mode Secondary PCI Mode.
    ide2: BM-DMA at 0x6000-0x6007, BIOS settings: hde:DMA, hdf:pio
    ide3: BM-DMA at 0x6008-0x600f, BIOS settings: hdg:DMA, hdh:DMA

Is this what you wanted to know?

I just tried to do some more tests with the partition with corrupt files
and I was really surprised that a file, which was corrupt (I couldn't
delete it as root or move/rename it) was okey and I could delete it. Now
another file was corrupt instead. What is going on here?! I have not
even touched the files since I wrote the mail to the mailing list, so
I'd suppose the same file, which was corrupt in the previous fsck would
be corrupt now as well. Any ideas or comments? Could it be a problem
with Reiserfs?

Best regards,
Tommy

Sounds to me like a disk problem. We recently had a bunch of failed
200GB SATA Maxtors with 16MB cache in a RAID array. The Maxtors
seemed very sensitive to ambient temperature (we suspected the disks
had been temperature stressed although client clains an ambient room
temperature of 75F), were purchased in Jan of this year. Install
bonnie++ and run it on the disk without encryption and with just
reiserfs, see if the disk dies or you have error messages. The
non-dead maxtors in the array died with between 4 and 30 hours of
stress testing in a room with an ambient of 65F... the conclusion
was, that once stressed, the disks are on their way to failure, it
was just a question of time.

Best regards,

Okey. I have installed bonnie++ and run quite many test runs using
different configurations. No problems at all; the disk works like it
should. I have not done any 30 hour tests, but a few hours was no
problem at all. I really do not think this is the problem.

Best regards,
Tommy

Any ide driver error messages prior to those messages?

Your hdparm and losetup examples used hda. Above info is for hd{e,f,g,h}

That sounds like some file metadata was corrupted while it was read from
disk platters to kernel ram. That bad metadata seemed to persist because
kernel cached that corrupted data. Eventually that cached data was dropped
because kernel needed that ram for something else. On new read from disk,
all went ok.

Any chance you could test using ext3 file system?

you could post this to the ReiserFS list (reiserfs-list@namesys.com) to
find out more about the errors and its severity (or you could wade through
the sourcecode by yourself). then you can think about using their support
offer: http://www.namesys.com/support.html

"have had" or "have"? can you take the disk to another machine and
reproduce the same errors? does

% dd if=/dev/hda of=/dev/null bs=8M

work without errors? (please check the syslog!)

Is that PIII a SMP or uni-processor box?

My test scripts have now hammered reiserfs on multi-key-v3 encrypted
loop-AES on 2.6.8.1 kernel for almost 24 hours now. SMP kernel but run on
uni-processor box. Zero errors so far.

Tommy,
I am going to need far more detailed instructions how to reproduce these
errors, including full kernel config and a test script that can reliably
produce these errors.

Well, the example with /dec/hda was just an example. Actually I have
hde, hdg, hdh in use (as you can see above).

What does that mean exactly? Is it a problem with loop-AES, reiserfs or
something else? Is it a persistent problem or just something
temporarily? Is it connected to the corruptions I have noticed or is
this just something else?

I'm looking into this. I'll tell you as soon as I have tested it.

It was a dual PIII 500MHz, but I do not have it any more.

I'm currently doing some more indepth tests to be able to give better
details about the problem. I'll also try to use ext3, and when I'm done
I can post the findings on the mailing list.

Meanwhile, if you (Jari) want me to provide you with additional
information just tell me what you need. I can send you everything except
a test script, which reproduces the problem (I'm currently working on this).

Best regards,
Tommy
