If same key file is used for multiple partitions, then adversary can easi=
ly
detect what sectors are identical on different partitions. Identical
plaintext data on different sectors on same file system are not a problem
because sector number is used in IV computation, and sector number is
guaranteed to be unique on one file system.

Storing key file somewhere else improves security, but re-using same key
file for multiple partitions opens a weakness.

Ok for one DVD. Not ok for two or more DVDs.

Lockups with 30k files on one directory sound more like file system
implementation bug.

Wouldn't this be negated by the fact that you're initialising the=20
storage space for the ISO with /dev/urandom? This would be a fairly=20
good guarantee that blank sectors (the most likely things to be=20
identical) are going to still be different. I thought ISO images=20
wouldn't include any unused blocks, anyway, which would also mean that=20
blank sectors would be irrelevant.

And therefore, if you're not writing identical files in identical=20
locations, isn't the risk associated with reusing a set of keys reduced?

Another way of going about this might be to write a file from=20
/dev/urandom at the size you want and set this up as an loop-AES file=20
system. Copy your files on and then unmount it. Then copy this=20
encrypted filesystem onto the disk. When you want to access it, just=20
use aespipe or loop-AES (not sure which, given the earlier argument=20
about blocksizes) to open that file as a filesystem. Why try to encrypt=20
the ISO image at all?

Have fun,

Paul

But why would anyone use same key file? There is no reason to do that.

Peter's point was to keep the weakest part on USB-stick so attacker would
not have access to it. The weakest part is the human memorizable passphrase
that protects symmetrically encrypted key file or private keyring.

Nothing prevents you from encrypting the per DVD key file using public key
crypto and storing the weak part (human memorizable passphrase encrypted
private keyring) to USB-stick. Simply point the gpghome= mount option to
USB-stick (auto-)mounted directory.

>Note that whatever the file system is it won't be recognized
by most DVD burning software, it looks like a random data stream.<<

What I just have seen is, that there is also a problem with DVD-ROM drives
not recognizing a crypted DVD as a valid medium. It seems because there is a
random stream on it (at least it looks like it), the drive does think it is
garbage and won't allow me to mount. With the DVD-burner, it worked, but I
have that in a different pc than the crypto-setup
Does anyone know how to fix that? or are there some DVD-ROMS who will
recognize the DVDs?

>> The question is how much data fits on DVD? 4.0 or 4.4GB?
>4,700,000,000 Bytes without overburn, about 4.4GB, my current images are
4699996160 bytes.<<

Oh. I never was able to manage to get more than about 4.1 GB on a DVD, since
bigger files caused NERO to warn me of oversized Image file...

About LOOP-AES and AES-PIPE (Why is it called AES anyway - from what I've
read, there are multiple ciphers avaiable not only AES) - are they in the
gentoo-library? I mean, can I install them with gentoos "emerge". I found
aes-pipe:

: emerge search aes
*  app-crypt/aespipe
      Latest version available: 2.2a
Latest version installed: [ Not Installed ]
Size of downloaded files: 72 kB
      Homepage: http://loop-aes.sourceforge.net
Description: Encrypts data from stdin to stdout.
      License: GPL-2

but not aes-loop or loop-aes. I was wondering, if aes-pipe is there why not
the (required?) loop-aes? Or is it hidden?

Ciao

The following is for Gentoo users:

You should really be using aespipe 2.3a. Portage has just not been
updated, I have an open bug on the gentoo bugzilla.

http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=52046

You can prod them a bit to update portage...

In the meantime you can do the following as root:

1. Uncomment the PORTAGE_OVERLAY in /etc/make.
2. mkdir /usr/local/portage
3. mkdir /usr/local/portage/app-crypt
4. cp -r /usr/portage/app-crypt/aespipe /usr/local/portage/app-crypt
5. cd /usr/local/portage/app-crypt/aespipe
6. cp aespipe-2.2a.ebuild aespipe-2.3a.ebuild
7. ebuild aespipe-2.3a.ebuild fetch
8. ebuild aespipe-2.3a.ebuild digest #after checking GPG sig
9. USE="static" emerge -pv aespipe

Loop-aes is not in portage since it involves building modules for
your kernel and writing and testing an e-build for every kernel
variant is difficult. Feel free to make an e-build if you can and
post to Gentoo bugzilla.

Best regards,

- ---Venkat.

I made a drive using this setup:

offset=8192 encryption=AES256 multi-key-v3

Now, throughput on my rather weak Linux-running pentium 200MHz fell when
upgrading from plain v1-AES128. This is not surprising; however
multikey-v3 also eats more processing power, am I right?

Is AES128 safe enough in your mind Jari; I see you use it in your
examples in the README. Downgrading would give me better performance I
suppose.

multikey v2 and v3 eat more processing power than v1.
AES256 eats more processing power than AES128.

I use AES128 myself.

Three loop threads sleeping. Nothing unusual there.

But the stopped fsck and fsck.ext2 processes look strange.

there is no "safe" and "unsafe". 256bit AES is "safer than" 128bit AES and
ROT-13 is probably "safer than" plaintext-hidden-under-your-chair.
consider the importance of your data, the amount of cpu-power (aka
"money") of the people trying to get your plaintext and your willingnes to
exchange cipher-bits for speed..then you'll get a figure of what you can
consider "safe" for your system. i'm using AES128bit too, and Jari "Mr.
loop-aes" Ruusu also uses 128bit AES too...it can't be that unsafe, can it?

Christian.

Hello,

does the AES assembly optimization code included in loop-AES package
is AES128-specific, or if it takes care of AES256 too ?

(it might seem obvious it works for both, but I want to be *sure*)

Thanks, ciao,

The optimizations work for AES128 and AES256. When you upgrade from a
previous version of loop-aes you will feel the increase of speed and the
drop of cpu load while reading/writing from encrypted media. To make use
of these features you need an AMD64 CPU and a 64-bit kernel.
Even without figures and statistics: It´s impressive and worth trying.

Peter

Hi all,=20

I'm trying to configure my linux box to use the loop-aes. When I
run "make tests" after compile (make clean, make) and get the
loop-aes-utils debian package (that have the already packed mount,
losetup.. - btw, this available package could be informed into the
next loop-AES.README) the following error happens:

gn:u/usr/src/loop-aes/loop-AES-v3.0b#make tests

I've googled but none error like these seems happened before.
Does anybody have some idea about what can being happening? The kernel
version is 2.6.10, GNU/Linux Debian testing machine.

  Thanks in advance,

if I understand this right, you have just made a Debian package of
loop-aes-{modules,utils} and run the test before installing the new package=
s?
The test uses an older, patched (?) version of losetup and/or loop-aes
module. That might be the reason, why it fails.

BTW: Is loop-aes prepared to be torn into a deb upstream? (Jari?) If not,
I'd be interested, where you got it from, Rodrigo, since according to

http://packages.debian.org/cgi-bin/search_packages.pl?keywords=3Dloop-aes&s=
earchon=3Dnames&subword=3D1&version=3Dall&release=3Dall

there's only loop-aes 2.2d in testing/unstable at the time of writing.

Greetings,
 Mike

Thanks for you reply. Sorry If I was not very clear, I'll try
explain better now:

      1) I've got the last-kernel-stable 2.6.10, configured it as
described in the README: (from my .config) and rebooted with it
       CONFIG_MODULES=3Dy
       # CONFIG_BLK_DEV_LOOP is not set
       CONFIG_KMOD=3Dy
        # CONFIG_BLK_DEV_LOOP is not set

       2) I've got the mount/losetup aes-patched version by
bash$ apt-get install loop-aes-utils =20

       3) I've downloaded the loop-aes and installed it:
bash$ wget -c "http://loop-aes.sourceforge.net/loop-AES/loop-AES-v3.0b.tar.=
bz2"
bash# tar xjvf loop-AES-v3.0b.tar.bz2; cd loop-AES-v3.0b; make clean;
make [as root user]

       4) I've tested it
bash# make tests [as root user]
.. as so got that error (with some more lines now):

[...]

Any ideas about what can being happenig? In time, does the key

Hi all!

I've got resolve the problem and get the so expected message "***
Test results ok ***" ! :)

I've installed the last loop-aes-utils and get the problem resolved:
 bash# apt-get install -t unstable loop-aes-utils
 bash# apt-show-versions loop-aes-utils
loop-aes-utils/unstable uptodate 2.12p-2

Before was installed the testing version:

> baroni@gnu:~$ apt-show-versions loop-aes-utils
> loop-aes-utils/testing uptodate 2.12a-3
> baroni@gnu:~$

So Jari, consider apply in the README, adding the "apt-get install
-t loop-aes-utils" to debian users to the last version of the
loop-aes (loop-AES-v3.0b) instead of patching the mount, losetup,..
commands. The 'make tests' show that is ok. Btw, I'll be running an
whole system very soon using that package with the loop-AES-v3.0b and
report any error/warning message to the list. If that not comes,
assume that everything is running sweet :)

Thanks Jari for the contribuition to the free-softaware.

this isn't the first time for errors to occur during setup because of
some incompatible packages... you debian users hold the high-score
tho ;-)

one should prefer cooking one's own install and not use apt-get for
this. in general, relying on packages made by others when it comes to
security stuff isn't very smart.

Given that you rely on the packages for everything else, I don't see it
makes much real difference.
