Kernel 2.4.22 and later contains the crypto-API so you only need the
cryptoloop patch.=20
have you tried the patches for .22 on .23? cryptoloop-jari [1] applies
with out any problems.

buy a ticket, you have already paid to get any
prize you might have won.

Hi -

I've been investigating doing encrypted backups to tape using afio and
gpg. Unfortunately this method proved to be extremely slow compared to
the standard backup (which was expected). Someone on the
debian-security list suggested looking at using a loop device such as
loop-aes that is connected to /dev/nst0 as this might be faster.

The only problem I can foresee with this is if there are media errors
on the tape. How does the loop device cope with this? afio manages to
deal with this sort of thing by spooling forward until the corrupt
data is passed over and a correct magic id can be found, but
presumably if the tape is encrypted a media error will lose the rest
of the tape... is this true?

Thanks

Marcus

AFAI understand CBC you loose the corrupted blocks + the one following
it, after that you should be OK.

(With CFB you loose everything after the corruption and CTB(?) shouldn't
even loose the block following the corruption.)

But i'm only an amateuer in crypto-things, so i may be wrong.

Can you change the block mode used on the loop device then?

Dont worry too much, me too! I can check up about the block modes in
my copy of appl crypt.

Thanks

Following applies to both aespipe and loop-AES because they use same on-disk
format:

One bit ciphertext error causes the 16 byte block in which the error is to
be completely destroyed, plus one bit error in the next 16 byte block. The
one bit error in next block does not occour if wrong ciphertext bit happens
to be in last 16 bytes of 512 byte CBC chain. Also, in multi-key mode first
16 bytes of the 512 byte CBC chain are completely destroyed due to incorect
MD5 IV. In all cases the errors stay within same 512 byte block.

If compression is used (like in bz2aespipe script), then errors may
propagate to much larger set of data. Decompressors operate in GIGO mode,
garbage in - garbage out, and you may even get a bonus SIGSEGV if you are
lucky.

Ok. Thats what I needed to know.

So compress stuff before you put it on the loop presumably. We count
losing single files as fair risk over an unknown person potentially
having access to unencrypted backups.

Thanks for info,

Well, you should always compress before encrypting. Encrypted data is
supposed to look fairly random, and hence should have extremely bad
compression ratios. Perhaps Jari is referring to the fact that if
you're compressing, then the 16+ bytes that you lost of compressed
data, since it is compressed, represents maybe 32+ bytes of real data.

Sorry, That makes absolutely no sense. I should avoid posting this
late at night.

Any errors in the underlying compressed data have the possibility of
cascading down and resulting in a whole lot more errors later in the
file.

I think that you had said (in the Debian list) that afio does per-file
compression, so if you want errors to be restricted to only within
single files, that's probably the best thing to do.

hi,
I have an encrypted file system with kernel 2.4.20, I'm trying to open it
with 2.6.1 and util-linux 2.12,

after digging in some mailing lists I noticed you removed the password
hash functionality in losetup, so now I need to do:

hashprogram | losetup -e serpent-128 -p 0 /dev/loop0 myfile

now my question is: which program does the same hashing as losetup did and
where to get it?

is there some thing as a converting from previous to the new util-linux
howto?

thanks

hashalot will do the same kind of hashing, if you use the "rmd160compat"
hash.

You'll also need some patches for util-linux so that it will work with
hashed passphrases and key sizes other than 256 bits. You can get these
and hashalot at <URL:http://www.stwing.org/~sluskyb/util-linux/>.

Hey Guys,=20
                         =20
I wanted to let you know about a deal I worked out for you with Speakeasy--=
the gracious host of the Fileshack and Shacknews network. They're ringing i=
n the new year by putting together a pretty sweet offer on their DSL servic=
e that's custom built for online gamers.=20

It's called the Fast, Cheap and Easy promotion, and it's exclusively for Fi=
leshack members.=20
3.0/768 for a mere $69.95/month for the first three months.=20
After that, pay just $99.95/month for this top-of-the-line package.=20
And, best of all the Speakeasy Gamer package--which includes a premium File=
shack account--is included for free for the first year (a $120 value)! Chec=
k out all the details at: http://www.speakeasy.net/promos/fastcheapeasy/gam=
er

Just to give you an idea of what a great deal this is, the same Speakeasy p=
ackage in 2003 was $149/month. You'd be saving more than $678 in 2004 if yo=
u get it now.

Speakeasy has been a huge part of the Shack's success over the past year an=
d there is no other broadband provider out there doing this much for the ga=
ming community. They also do cool stuff like place file and multiplayer gam=
e servers inside their nationwide network to give gamers the best ping time=
s possible. And since they don't have any lame restrictions on what you can=
/can't do with your connection, they are great for hosting your own servers=
, running BitTorrents and applications you want to use, or setting up a wir=
eless network at home.

Check it out!=20

Steve
