Ben:

Thanks for these patches!

I have been working on encrypted-root, with the password mangled via gpg
key pairs.

I can get everything to work (almost) with a "stock" util-linux-2.12 via
the following losetup chain:

gpg --homedir /mnt/usb/.gnupg \
~ -d /mnt/usb/.gnupg/hard-disk-keyfile.gpg | \
~ losetup -e twofish -p 0 /dev/loop/5 $DATA

This works -- *until* you try to run something like this from PID 1
(init), for example in a pivot_root set-up script at boot time. When you
do that, you don't have a TTY, and GPG will die with "can't open /dev/tty".

So I need something like Jari's lomount patch, which expands the getpass
~ functions in lomount to call GPG (with the --no-tty option, and using
xgetpass).

Is there some way to merge the two approaches? Or to use your approach
with GPG that I am missing?

Thanks!

Looking over Jari's patch, it seems that

gpg --homedir /mnt/usb/.gnupg --batch \
  --no-tty --passphrase-fd 0 -q \
  -d /mnt/usb/.gnupg/hard-disk-keyfile.gpg |
  losetup -e twofish-cbc-128 -p 0 /dev/loop/5 $DATA

ought to work. Or do I misunderstand what you're trying to accomplish?

FROM:FRED PROTIUS
PHON:27-73-200-1992
E-MAIL:fredprotius@yahoo.co.uk

DEAR SIR/MADAM

                 STRICTLY CONFIDENCIAL

My name is FRED Protius, the elder son of Mr. Jacob
Protius from Zimbabwe. This might be a surprise to you

about where I got your contact address. I got your
address from the South African Information centre

During the current war against the farmers in Zimbabwe

from the supports of our President Robert Mugabe to
claim all the white-owned farms to his party members
and his followers, he ordered all white farmers to
surrender all their farms to his party members and
his followers.

My father is one of the best farmers in our country
and because he did not support Mugabe's ideas,
Mugabe's supporters invaded my father's farm and
burnt everything in the farm, killing my father and
made away with a lot of items in my father's farm.

Before his death, my father had deposited with one of
the Security Company in Johannesburg, South Africa the

sum of US$18. 5 Million (Eighteen Million Five
Hundred Thousand United States Dollars). After the
death of my father, we decided to move to the Republic

of South Africa where he had deposited the money in
the Security Company as valuables.

So I decided to contact overseas firm and companies
that will assist me to move this money out of South
Africa. Now, I would like you to come down to South
Africa and assist me to get the fund from the Security
Company and also to open a non-resident dollar account
where the money will be deposited first for onward
transfer into your account, because as asylum seekers
we are not allowed to operate any bank account within
South Africa.

We have agreed to offer you 20% of the total sum for
your assistance, 5% will be mapped out for any
expenses that may be incurred in the course of this
transaction and 75% will be for me and my
family to invest in your country.

All I want you to do is to furnish me with your entire

personal phone and fax numbers for easy communication.

You can contact me on the above Telephone and fax
numbers. Note that this transaction is 100% risk free
and absolutely confidential.

Thanks and God bless.

Regards

FRED PROTIUS.

Hello

I cannot seem to get crypto loopback to run.

This is 2.4.22 + patch-cryptoloop-jari-2.4.22.0 from kernel.org on an Debian Woody usntable

# losetup -e blowfish /dev/loop0 /tmp/cryptfile
Password :
The cipher does not exist, or a cipher module needs to be loaded into the kernel
ioctl: LOOP_SET_STATUS: Invalid argument

i also tried it with util-linux-2.12pre with this result:

usr/src/util-linux-2.12pre/mount# ./losetup -e blowfish /dev/loop0 /tmp/cryptfile
Unsupported encryption type blowfish

i already tired the modular way and also tried to use cryptoapi and loopcrypt static complied in the kernel, but always the same
result

in the modular way the modules listed below are loaded.

# lsmod
Module Size Used by Not tainted
twofish 36112 0 (autoclean)
blowfish 6832 0
cryptoloop 1404 0 (unused)
loop 11860 0 (autoclean) [cryptoloop]

Why doesn't it work?

Thanks,
Alex

I got it working here, I used util-linux-2.11z with an extra patch which
combines all the util-linux-crypto-patches, but I don't remember the url
at the moment. I can look later if you can't find it.

The filename was util-linux-2.11z-crypto-v3.diff

I thought that the util-linux packet from debian unstable is already prepatched
for usage of crypto stuff, but anyway if you find the url to this patch file i could
test it :)

btw:
Am i right with my tought that i don´t need to apply the crypto-api (international kernel)
patch to 2.4.22 coze for me it seems that the crypto api is already included in the
normal 2.4.22 source ?!
In other words: the only kernel patch needed is the jars cryptloop patch ?

In some other discussion threads i saw ppl asking about the /proc/crypto/chipters content
but on my system /proc/crypto isn´t a directory its a file, if i do a cat on it the result is:

# cat /proc/crypto

It somehow has, but to make this kernel work I had to use this patch.

Thats what I did.

On my one too.

not yet, unfortunately. see
<URL:http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=206396>

>for usage of crypto stuff, but anyway if you find the url to this
>patch file i could test it :)

the patch is minimal and contained in that bug report,
and it works (on the machine i'm typing this on at least).
my version of util-linux is 2.11z-1 plus that one patch, which
affects only the mount package.

there's one ugly side effect of that patch, though: losetup now /always/
asks for a keysize and password, even if you want to mount a bog-standard
iso9660 image with no encryption whatsoever.

>In other words: the only kernel patch needed is the jars cryptloop patch ?

correct. also the cryptoloop-source or cryptoapi-core-source packages
are no longer necessary.

az

It was prepatched for the old Crypto API. 2.6 kernels and the
feature backport to 2.4.22 have a different API because crypto
is now part of the linux kernel source. I've tried to get
a message to Adrian Bunk but have no reply so farm so...

I'm glad to see someone has filed a report.

There is another side-effect. The password taken by
losetup is no longer the plaintext, but is assumed to
be already hashed. If you wish to use an old loopback
file system, you will have to feed your plaintext
password through "hashalot" and pipe it into losetup.

You might wish to refer to the archives as I posted the
detail of an install and test of this from scratch on
a virgin 2.4.21 patched up to 2.4.22rc2. Procedure is
the same, you just omit the pre22 patch and start from
2.4.22 source base.

ahem, that can't be all the truth: i haven't got hashalot
but am currently using my old encrypted partition just the same as
before (ie. typing the same passphrase to losetup) without any
problems.

that's an aes-encrypted partition which had been created using
the cryptoapi-core and cryptoloop packages (sometime between 2.4.18 and
2.4.21) and a standard debian losetup.
now i'm using 2.4.22 with jari's cryptoloop patch and the in-kernel cryptoapi.

so, where are our setups different?

regards
az

I can confirm this, I got a aes-256 partition too which works with
2.4.21 + debian mount and 2.4.22 with loop-jari and the spedial patch
for 2.11z.
