Hi,

Does anyone know what the easiest way is to access the functionality
provided my cryptoapi from a user space program. I want to send
encrypted data between two programs and the crypto API provides all the
functionality I need.

The problem I'm having is how to link my program to the symbols provided
by the API. Will I need to create my own library or is there a mechanism
for do this already.

I note that the crypto-test programs create standalone objects to carry
out the tests.

Thanks

Ian Macfarlane

Getting PPDD to work on RH isn't the easiest thing in the world because of
version differences (due to RH patching their systems heavily) You can
find packaged version of PPDD for RH 7.3 and 8.0 (but sorry, no 7.2) at
http://ppdd4rhl.sourceforge.net/ so you don't need to patch + rebuild
everything, however those packages currently don't help in encrypting
the root in any way.

P.S. You'll get more easily answers to PPDD-specific questions on the
ppdd-mailing list: ppdd@linux01.gwdg.de

Some questions:

1) Where is the password stored that you type in upon
running losetup? Is it stored somewhere on the local
machine, or is it embedded in the "cryptofile" that
holds all the encrypted materials?

2) The reason I ask is that I would like to use an
encrypted filesystem across the network. If i set
everything up on MACHINE1, how would I connect to it
across the network? Create a traditional samba mount
so that my local MACHINE2 can access the encrypted
file/system "cryptofile" and then setup another
loopback on the local MACHINE2?

3) I guess what I'm wondering is what will happen with
the passwords. What happens if I take the giant file
that I use to store all the encrypted materials,
"cryptofile" and move it to another MACHINE3 and try
to use it?

Thanks

Your daily humor:

A woman went to her doctor for advice. She told the physician that her
husband had developed a penchant for anal sex, and she wasn't sure it
was such a good idea.

The Doctor asked, "Do you enjoy it?"

She said that she did.

He asked, "Does it hurt you?"

She said no.

The Doctor then told her, "Well, then, there's no reason that you
shouldn't practice anal sex, if that's what you like, so long as you
take care not to get pregnant."

The woman was mystified. She asked, "You can get pregnant from anal
sex?"

The Doctor replied, "Of course. Where do you think lawyers come from?"

The password isn't actually stored anywhere. It (or rather a hash of it which
is kept in RAM while the loop device is in use) is just used to encrypt and
decrypt the data in the file. If the wrong password is entered, no error will
occur and data will still be returned by the loop device, but it'll be
meaningless.

I think you'd have to share the mounted crypto-filesystem, rather than the
cryptofile containing it. Only one client would be able to use the cryptofile
at a time if you shared the file and tried to set up loop devices on each
client. Of course, if you were only going to access the fs on one client at a
time, you could probably set up a loop device over the network. I'm not sure
how well it works, though. The last time I tried using a loop over NFS, it
panicked my system (but that was quite a while ago).

You should have no problem using it on any machine with the appropriate crypto
code installed.

Your daily humor:

Two story house

A man appears before a judge one day, asking for a divorce.
The judge quietly reviews some papers and then says,
"Please tell me why you are seeking a divorce."

"Because," the man says,"I live in a two-story house."

The Judge replies, "What kind of a reason is that?
What is the big deal about a two-story house?"

The man answers, "Well Judge, one story is 'I have a headache'
and the other story is 'It's that time of the month.'

I still have no response from anyone in the cryptoapi
developer group. However, if you are still having problems,
I have confirmed an April 2002 patch set that does not
exhibit this problem. It takes manual patching to get
it to work with 2.4.20 (and if you are using arm, or
a couple other non-i385 architectures it fails), but
I've been able to get working crypto kernels that way.

I have been completely unable to get the current cvs
tree patches to work. I have no idea what is wrong
with them, or more likely, what is missing from the
documentation about what has been changed.

Let me know if you'd like the old set.

hi, under mandrake's distro 9.0 : 2.4.19-16mdksecure , I get occasional
bad reads from disk into buffer. filesystem reiserfs (if that matters),

/etc/fstab:
/dev/hdd2 /mnt/pepsi reiserfs encrypted,encryption=AES,notail 1 1

it appears that the corruption is always in 17-byte chunks.
Also, the buffer stays same until it is removed and re-read.

please note that in the examples below, disk reading activities were
performed between comparisons (cmp -l), to force invalidation of the
current buffer in hopes that next read would re-read the disk and get the
copy into the buffer correctly. Sometimes it is read into the buffer
correctly, sometimes not, as can be seen from below.

through the whole experiment, the files (pepsi-semifinal-JYp*m)
haven't changed, but cmp -l has reported them differently a few times.

what's wrong ? how can this be fixed ? what do i do ?

thanks - rkelly

Hi there,
I've been trying to integrate the crypto patches
with the Mandrake kernel src rpm.

However, even though make menuconfig shows the
selection option for cryptoloop, and I select it,
it doesn't get compiled.

- All rejects have been accounted for and merged.
There was only one; the main Makefile.

- I used the CryptoAPI Magic Installer

- I also tried manually patching with
make patch-kernel from the unpacked cryptoapi
directory and the unpacked cryptoloop directory.

- I tried using anonymous cvs to get the latest
cryptoloop source tree; the patching process against
the 2.4.19 kernel doesn't work; can't find a file.
Seems to be a bug in the findpatch.pl script?
I'm not a perl programmer but it seems to have the
wrong -p level?

Interestingly,
'make modules' from the cryptoloop directory tries
to patch the kernel source tree; I thought it was
supposed to compile the modules only in the cryptoloop
directory and leave the main kernel source tree alone?

I've also tried patching a pristine 2.4.19 kernel source
tree using the 'magic installer' and it wouldn't compile
the cryptoloop module either, though once again, the
configure option was there, was selected, and inspection
of .config shows it selected.
The compile process didn't even touch the relevent sections
of the source tree.
So I downloaded the 'magic installer' script and inspected
it; the section on the cryptoloop module appears to be
disabled?

Is cryptoloop temporarily broken?

Thanks!

bad reads from disk into buffer. filesystem reiserfs (if that matters),

i've seen the corruption mentioned on this list in connection with XFS

/etc/fstab:

Looks like something trashes bit 5 of RAM page at address 0x?????FD9. Such
one bit errors of encrypted data always cause one 16 byte block to decrypt
to garbage, plus one bit error in the next 16 byte block because of cipher
block chaining. All of the "cmp -l ..." dumps show exactly same pattern.

May I suggest that you run memtest86 for 24 hours on that box. Last time I
looked (it has been a while), memtest86 was available at:

http://www.memtest86.com/

Since you appear to be using Mandrake that includes loop-AES, AES encryption
type is unhashed and password length determines actual number of key bits
used to encrypt. AES128, AES192 and AES256 encryption types hash password
with SHA-256, SHA-384 or SHA-512 and use specified number key bits to
encrypt regardless of password length. Same AES cipher is used in all cases,
only key is set up differently.

For new setups, use AES128, AES192 or AES256, and specify password seed with
'mount -o pseed=xxxxxxxxxx' or 'losetup -S xxxxxxxxxx'.

But the question is why?

Mandrake kernels include loop-AES, which is twice as fast on most modern
boxes than what CryptoAPI+cryptoloop can deliver. Not only is it faster, but
it also works with just about any maintained stable kernel that exists.
Latest version is here:

You are dead right in that Mandrake comes with the
AES encryption.

I thought that;
1. it would be nice to be able to try some other encryption
algorithms out and have some variety!
2. I wanted to see if I could.

So far I havn't had much luck; I've had to drop
several of the Mandrake provided kernel patches, incl.
the kdb patch, because it was this which was munging
the Makefile so that even though the cryptoloop/api
was showing in make config (et.al) it wasn't getting
compiled. I didn't know enough about the structure of
makefiles to work around it.

So put it down to mental exercise and learning!
;)

My name is Mr George Man, the manager, EcoBank plc. I am writing in respect of a
foreign customer of my bank with account number 14-255-2004/utb/t who perished
in a plane crash [Korean Air Flight 801] with the whole passengers aboard on
August 6, 1997.

Since the demise of this our customer,Ms Bunten Wendy, I personally has watched
with keen interest to see the next of kin but all has proved abortive as no one
has come to claim his funds of usd.20.5 m, [twenty million five hundred thousand
united states dollars] which has been with my branch for a very long time.

On this note, I decided to seek for whom his name shall be used as the next of
kin as no one has come up to be the next of kin. And the banking ethics here
does not allow such money to stay more than five years, because money will be
recalled to the bank treasury as unclaimed after this period. In view of this I
got your contact through a trade journal after realizing that your name and country is similar to the deceased. I will give you 25% of the total.

Upon the receipt of your response, I will send you by fax or e-mail the
application, bank's fax number and the next step to take. I will not fail to
bring to your notice that this business is hitch free and that you should not
entertain any fear as all modalities for fund transfer can be finalized within
five banking days, after you apply to the bank as a relation to the deceased.

When you receive this letter. Kindly send me an e-mail signifying your decision
including your private Tel/Fax numbers for quick communication.

Respectfully submitted,
Georgeman
