Loop-AES and kerneli.org-cryptoapi use same on-disk format, but userspace
tools need different options. To mount AES encrypted volumes created with
kerneli.org-cryptoapi in loop-AES, use mount option -o phash=rmd160 or
losetup option -H rmd160, and specify cipher name as AES128, AES192 or
AES256.

Mandrake kernel AES on-disk format and userspace command options are 100%
compatible with loop-AES.

SuSE kernel twofish uses different on-disk format. Twofish loop cipher
module in loop-AES' ciphers add-on package is compatible with SuSE kernel
twofish if appropriate options are given to mount or losetup.

Kernel 2.5/2.6 on-disk formats are same as before.

Hi,

I just installed gentoo and wanted to use loop aes on a 420GB volume.

the volume resides on a 3ware ide raid5. I wanted to format it with the
XFS filesystem.

is it true I shall disable write cache on the controller ?

Now I read the README that comes with loop-aes. the parameters seem
wrong its not

losetup -e AES128 it seems to be

losetup -e aes -k 128. well no problem here.

Im trying example #3
It says I shall keep the seed somewhere, but in the example its in the
fstab isnt it ? I suppose its for convienience but better not to keep
there ?

is solution #3 more secure because of the seed than number 4 (the gpg
solution), altho in #4 I could save the keyfile on a CD or an usb
keychain storage ?

I mean in #4 I dont do a dd over the whole disk.

I did the swap encryption thing as in the read me, however doesnt matter
which parameters I put in fstab swapon always works, so I wonder how can
I check if swap is really encrypted ?

And finally I wonder how much morge secure aes256 is over aes128 , cause
I got no idea. I wonder when/if I need 256.

my read/write acces seem to slow down about 50% with aes256.

thx for help on this :-))

Hi,

sorry but im really new to this. installed gentoo yesterday and it has
crypto support in the kernel.

I load couple modules and do stuff as in loop-aes readme. Now I just
wondered, could it be that I dont use loop-aes but cryptoapi stuff ?

I dont know wether the gentoo people inlcuded loop-aes.

How can I tell ? is loop-aes faster then cryptoapi ? which are the
advantages ?

I think ive been playing with the wrong stuff... :(

thx for clearing things up for me.

Journaled file systems usually require that.

Former is correct for loop-AES use. Latter is correct for
kerneli.org-cryptoapi use.

Seed needs to be in /etc/fstab. kerneli.org-cryptoapi does not support use
of seed (last time I looked).

Loop-AES examples #4 and #5 switch most of the burden to attacking GnuPG
instead of loop cipher.

kerneli.org-cryptoapi do encrypted swap using modifications to init scripts.
Loop-AES' swapon/swapoff do encrypted swap if they find loop= and
encryption= options in /etc/fstab.

To check if kernel is using loop devices to swap, type "cat /proc/swaps".
One or more lines of output should begin with "/dev/loop? "

AES128 should be secure. AES256 is for paranoids.

Yes, that seems to be the case.

I haven't seen version of kerneli.org-cryptoapi that outperformed loop-AES.

> I think ive been playing with the wrong stuff... :(

If you want to continue using kerneli.org-cryptoapi, use their docs to set
up loop devices. If you want replace kerneli.org-cryptoapi with loop-AES,
just follow instructions in loop-AES' README file.

that in the kernel, got loop-aes, patched all stuf needed and it seems
to work great!

im checking with bonnie++ now to see performance. With cryptoapi I had
about 50% performance loss on the raid.

AS SEEN ON NATIONAL TV IN AMERICA

Making over half million dollars every 4 to 5 months from your home for an investment of only $25 U.S. Dollars expense one
time!

Before you read the rest, this is the letter you have been hearing about on the news lately. Due to the popularity of this
letter on the Internet, US national weekly news program recently devoted an entire show to the investigation of this program
described below, to see if it really can make people money. The show also investigated whether or not the program was legal.
Their findings proved once and for all that there are ''absolutely NO Laws prohibiting the participation in the program and
if people can follow the simple instructions, they are bound to make some mega bucks with only $25 out of pocket cost''.

Due to the recent increase of popularity & respect this program has attained, it is currently working better than ever; this
is what one had to say: Thanks to this profitable opportunity. I was approached many times before but each time I passed on
it. I am so glad I finally joined to see what one could expect in return for the minimal effort and money required, To my I
received total USD610,470.00 in 21 weeks. With money still coming in. This program has been around for a long time but I
never believed in it. But one day when I received this again in the mail I decided to gamble my $25 on it. I followed the
simple instructions and later I keep receiving envelope with $$$ till now.

THE SECRET RECOVERED HISTORY OF THE FOUNDATION STONE

The unique ideal rapidly multiplying any size investment has always been successful, although the principle concept is
unknown to the vast majority of people; the core secrets have been carefully preserved and passed on to each succeeding
business through the ideal.

The following is an example:

Let's see how the ideals of rapidly multiplying goes, assume you and those involved send out 5,000 e-mails each. Let's also
assume that the mailing receive only a 0.2% response (the response could be much better but lets just say it is only 0.2%.
Also many people will send out hundreds of thousands e-mails instead of only 5,000 each). Continuing with this example, you
send out only 5,000 e-mails. With a 0.2% response, that is only 10 orders for report #1. Those 10 people responded by sending
out 5,000 e-mail each for a total of 50,000. Out of those 50,000 e-mails only 0.2% responded with orders. That's 100 people
responded and ordered Report #2. Those 100 people mail out 5,000 e-mails each for a total of 500,000 e-mails. The 0.2%
response to that is 1000 orders for Report #3. Those 1000 people send out 5,000 e-mails each for a total of 5million e-mails
sent out. The 0.2% response to that are 10,000 orders for Report #4. Those 10,000 people send out 5,000 e-mails each for a
total of 50,000,000 (50 million) e-mails. The 0.2% response to that is 100,000 orders for Report #5 THAT'S 100,000 ORDERS
TIMES $5 EACH=$500,000.00 (half million).

Your total in come in this example is:

1....$50+
2....$500+
3....$5,000+
4....$50,000+
5....$500,000 Grand Total = $555,550.00

MULTI - LEVEL MARKETING IS A LEADING WAY “MILLIONAIRES”

There are 2 Primary methods to get this venture going:

METHOD #1: By Sending Bulk E-mail Legally.

To assist you with marketing your business on the Internet, the 5 reports herein below you purchase will provide you with
invaluable marketing information which includes how to send bulk e-mails legally, where to find thousands of free classified
Ads and much more.

METHOD # 2 By Placing Free Ads on The Internet

REMEMBER FRIEND, THIS IS ASSUMING ONLY 10 PEOPLE ORDERING OUT OF 5,000 YOU MAILED TO. Dare to think for a moment what would
happen if everyone or half or even one 4th of those people mailed 100,000e-mails each or more? There are over 150 million
people on the Internet worldwide and counting. Believe me, many people will do just that, and more!

Advertising on the net is very inexpensive and there are hundreds of FREE places to advertise. Placing a lot of free ads on
the Internet will easily get a larger response. We strongly suggest you start with METHOD #1 and add METHOD #2 as you go
along. For every $5 you receive, all you must do is e-mail them the Report they ordered. That's it. Always provide same day
service on all orders. This will guarantee that the e-mail they send out, with your name and address on it will be prompt
because they can not advertise until they receive the report.

================================================================================

you will receive, vie e-mail, each of the 5 reports from these 5 different individuals, so they will be accessible for you
and advise you how to send to people who will order them from you. After you have ordered (posted out) all 5 reports

Make sure the cash is concealed by wrapping it in at least 2 sheets of paper. On one of those sheets of paper, write the
NUMBER & the NAME of the Report you are ordering, YOUR E-MAIL ADDRESS and your name and postal address.

IMPORTANT - DO NOT alter the names of the people who are listed next to each report, or their sequence on the list, in any
way other than what is instructed below in step ''1 through 6'' or you will loose out on majority of your profits. Once you
understand the way this works, you will also see how it does not work if you change it. Remember, this method has been
tested, and if you alter, it will NOT work! People have tried to put their friends/relatives names on all five thinking they
could get all the money. But it does not work this way. Believe us, we all have tried to be greedy and then nothing happened.
So Do Not tries to change anything other than what is instructed. If you do, it will not work for you. Remember, honesty
reaps the reward!

YOUR SUCCESS GUIDE LINES

Follow these guidelines to guarantee your success; your success will be based primarily on your level of activity. The more
activity you have, the more prospects you have, the more prospects you have, the larger your downline becomes, the larger
your downline becomes, the more envelope you received. If you do not receive at least 10 orders for Report #1 within 2 weeks,
continue sending e-mails until you do. After you have received 10 orders, 2 to 3 weeks after that you should receive 100
orders or more for Report #2. If you did not, continue advertising or sending e-mails until you do. Once you have received
100 or more orders for Report #2, YOU CAN RELAX, because the system is already working for you, and the cash will continue to
roll in! THIS IS IMPORTANT TO REMEMBER: Every time your name is moved down on the list, you are placed in Front of a
Different report. You can KEEP TRACK of your PROGRESS by watching which report people are ordering from you. IF YOU WANT TO
GENERATE MORE INCOME SEND ANOTHER BATCH OF E-MAILS AND START THE WHOLE PROCESS AGAIN. There is NO LIMIT to the income you can
generate from this business!!!

MORE TESTIMONIALS

"My name is Mitchell. My wife, Jody and I live in Chicago. I am an accountant with a major U.S. Corporation and I make pretty
good money. When I received this program I grumbled to Jody about receiving ''junk mail''. I made fun of the whole thing,
spouting my knowledge of the population and percentages involved. I ''knew'' it wouldn't work. Jody totally ignored my
supposed intelligence and few days later she jumped in with both feet. I made merciless fun of her, and was ready to lay the
old ''I told you so'' on her when the thing didn't work. Well, the laugh was on me! Within 3 weeks she had received 50
responses. Within the next 45 days she had received total $ 147,200.00 all cash! I was shocked. I have joined Jody in her
''hobby''.
Mitchell Wolf M.D., Chicago, Illinois

''Not being the gambling type, it took me several weeks to make up my mind to participate in this plan. But conservative that
I am, I decided that the initial investment was so little that there was just no way that I wouldn't get enough orders to at
least get my money back''. '' I was surprised when I found my medium size post office box crammed with orders. I made
$319,210.00 in the first 12 weeks. The nice thing about this deal is that it does not matter where people live. There simply
isn't a better investment with a faster return and so big."

Dan Sondstrom, Alberta, Canada

''I had received this program before. I deleted it, but later I wondered if I should have given it a try. Of course, I had no
idea who to contact to get another copy, so I had to wait until I was e-mailed again by someone else........11 months passed
then it luckily came again I did not delete this one! I made more than $490,000 on my first try and all the money came within
22 weeks."

Susan De Suza, New York, N.Y.

**********

''It really is a great opportunity to make relatively easy money with little cost to you. I followed the simple instructions
carefully and within 10 days the money started to come in. My first month I made $20,560.00 and by the end of third month my
total cash count was $362,840.00. Life is beautiful, Thank to Internet."

**********

''Not being the gambling type, it took me several weeks to make up my mind to participate in this plan. But conservative that
I am, I decided that the initial investment was so little that there was just no way that I wouldn't get enough orders to at
least get my money back''. '' I was surprised when I found my medium size post office box crammed with orders. I made
$319,210.00 in the first 12 weeks. The nice thing about this deal is that it does not matter where people live. There simply
isn't a better investment with a faster return and so big."

Dan Sondstrom, Alberta, Canada

**********

Fred Dellaca, Westport, New Zealand

Note of accuracy. AEs doesn't use 256k keys. :) It uses 256-bit keys.

<p>Web Lightning is a revolutionary program that speeds up your
Internet connection in two ways. First, it optimizes your registry
settings to make your computer's software work at it's fastest
potential. (Yes it's Geeky technical talk but there really are no
laymen's terms for that.) Second, Web Lightning turns your
computer into it's own DNS (Domain Name Server).

<li>You will get quicker downloads of files, graphics, pictures,
                  and more.
<li>You'll get faster internet speeds without buying costly
hardware, special high speed lines, or a new computer.
<li>Works will all browsers, including Explorer, Netscape, and

<li>NETSONIC: This is the program that will DRAMATICALLY
increase the speed that you surf the internet, especially if
you currently have a 56k or less modem. RAM BOOSTER: This one
frees up your RAM constantly, without you having to attend to
it, so your PC runs faster. The reason why your PC runs slower
and slower is because Windows 95/98 puts needless info into
your RAM memory over time. This cleans your RAM of all that
stuff that it practically never needed. No more unnecessary
                  boot-ups.
<li>WATERFALL: Decrease your CPU temperature up to 20C!
Waterfall is a wonderful little program that uses advanced
instructions found in Intel, Cyrix, and AMD to make them run
much cooler, without any loss in performance or stability!
Instead of replacing your fan/heatsink combo, give Waterfall a

                  online!
<li>CACHE MAN: Cache Man is a utility which tweaks the disk
cache settings and prevents frequent swapping of the data to
disk resulting in an improved performance and stability.
<li>GOZILLA!: This is a FANTASTIC download manager, that will
speed up your surfing even more!!! Gozilla lets you schedule
downloads and surf at the same time. Gozilla is a must have
for anyone who takes advantage of the great downloads on the
web. If you have ever experienced bad downloads due to
internet traffic and a slow internet connection, you know the
frustration of repeated downloads due to loss of connection.
This utility will monitor your connection and ensure a quality

MR.ZANKO MBANGA( B.Sc.,M.Sc)
Director,Project Implementation
Attn:Assistance From You.

                     STRICTLY CONFIDENTIAL & URGENT

I am Mr.Zanko Mbanga a native of Cape Town in South Africa and I am an Executive Accountant with the South African Department of Mining & Natural Resources. First and foremost, I apologized for using this medium,to reach you for a transaction/business of this magnitude, but this is due to Confidentiality and prompt access reposed on this medium. Be informed that a member of the South African Export Promotion Council (SEPC) who was at the Government delegation to your country during a trade exhibition gave your enviable credentials/particulars to me. I have decided to seek a confidential co-operation with you in the execution of the deal described Here under for the benefit of all parties and hope you will keep it as a top secret because of the nature of this transaction.

Within the Department of Mining & Natural Resources where I work as an Executive Accountant and with the co-operation of four other top officials,we have in our possession as over due payment bills totalling Fourteen Million, Three hundred Thousand US. Dollars (US$14.3million.) which we want to transfer abroad with the assistance and co-operation of a foreign company/individual to receive the said fund on our behalf or a reliable foreign non-company account to receive such funds. More so, we are handicapped in the circumstances, as the South African Civil Service Code of Conduct does not allow us to operate offshore account, hence you are important in the whole transaction.

This amount US$14.3m represents the balance of the total contract value executed on behalf of my Department by a foreign contracting firm, which we the officialsover-invoiced deliberately.

Though the actual contract cost have been paid to the original contractor, leaving the balance in the tune of the said amount which we have in principles gotten approval to remit by Key tested Telegraphic Transfer (K.T.T)to any foreign bank account you will provide,by filing in an application through the Ministry of Justice here in South Africa, for the transfer of rights and privileges of the former contractor to you.

I have the authority of my partners involved to propose that, should you be willing to assist us in the transaction, your share of the sum will be 30% of the US$14.3 million, 60% for us and 10% for taxation and miscellaneous expenses. The business itself is 100% safe on your part, provided you treat it with utmost secrecy and confidentiality. Also your area of specialization is not a hindrance to the successful execution of this transaction. I have reposed my confidence in you and hope that you will not
disappoint me. Endeavor to contact me immediately through my e-mail address to confirm whether or not you are interested in this deal. If you are not, it will enable me scout for another foreign partner to carry out this deal. I want to assure you that my partners and myself are in a position to make the payment of this claim possible, provided you can give us a very strong assurance and guarantee that our share will be secured. Please remember to treat this matter very confidential , because we will not comprehend with any form of exposure,as we are still in active Government Service .Once again, remember that time is of greatessence in this transaction.Positive response should be accompanied with your telephone and fax number so i can reach you immediately with more imformations.I wait in anticipation of your fullest co-operation.

Yours faithfully,
Mr.Zanko Mbanga.

Hello,

is there a way, to get loop-aes to work with standard SuSE kernels?

On my experiments it compiles (with a lot of rejects in the ignore
section though), but refuses to load loop.o:

./loop.o: init_module: Input/output error

This was with 2.4.10-4GB from a SuSE 7.3. I suppose, this is due to the
fact, that SuSE included their own loop extensions.

BTW: Do the mount/losetup tools of SuSE work with loop-aes ? Or do the
ones patched for loop-aes work with loop-fish2?

thanks, ju

PS:Please CC answers to me, as I have not subscribed to the list.

I've got a encrypted partition set up under /secure. I'd like the
partition to be unmounted after no-ones used it for, say, 30 minutes. I'm
guessing that there are already tools available to do this, so in order of
preference, can people advise me
- which fstab/mount option to use
- which command line tool to use
- which command line tool will tell me whether any process has a file open
under /secure and/or /dev/hdb6 (so I can write a script to run under cron)
- which API call to make in order to tell whether any process has a file
open under /secure and/or /dev/hdb6 (so I can write an executable to run
under cron)

Many TIA

Mark

I've been thinking about this too. I think it would be better to have
the screen lock do the umounting, for reasons which may become clear.

/sbin/fuser -m /secure will do the trick. What it will show, though, is
that all sorts of things end up holding files and directories open more
or less at random.

For a workstation, I think it would be better that when the display is
locked, the filesystem is umounted. I've even got some scripts that do
it, except I don't know how to hook them into xscreensaver to make it do
it.

fuser also takes a -k option to cause it to kill all the processes using
the file(s), which I use before umounting.

I use my pam_mount modules to tie mounting and unmounting encrypted
filesystems to logging in and logging out. XScreenSaver seems to support
PAM, so I guess it could be configured to use pam_mount to re-mount your
secure filesystem when you enter a password to unlock your screen.
Perhaps a hook could be added to XScreenSaver to unmount your filesystem
when the screensaver pops up.

Problem of open files remains, though.

Pam_mount is available at http://www.flyn.org.

Try using autofs. You can have it set up so that it doesn't even show in a
directory listing, then when you cd to it, it automagically mounts, then
unmounts after you've left it.
  Like have in your /etc/auto.misc
 crypt -fstype=reiserfs :/dev/loop0

and in your /etc/auto.master

/misc	/etc/auto.misc	--timeout=60

Of course you have to already have run losesetup. "crypt" will be a dir in /misc
but anyone not having permissions won't even be able to see any dir there.

Again, I think a properly designed system can easily be more secure.
As I mentioned, pam_mount can mount encrypted filesystems when a user logs
in and unmount them when a user logs out using the login authentication.
Assuming a good authentication technique (ie: a physical token containing
a maximum-entropy 256-bit key or maybe a good, long passphrase) and
carefully audited software, this architecture can be made pretty secure.

As I mentioned before unmounting and mounting could easily be tied to
XScreenSaver for increased protection.

Hi
I am newly downloaded CryptoAPI and trying to install
it. After the
'make patchkernel KDIR=<kernel source dir> LOOP=iv'
command I always take the following error message.

make: *** No rule to make target `patchkernel'. Stop.

What is the problem?
Could you please help me.

Thanks

Most likely this also results in "Unable to get major number 7 for loop"
kernel error message, viewable using dmesg.

Above means that your kernel already has initialized loop driver in kernel.
To use loop-AES' externally compiled module, you must disable loop driver in
your kernel by recompiling your kernel with CONFIG_BLK_DEV_LOOP=n.

loop-AES' loop.o provides many bug fixes not available in SuSE kernel loop,
so you are better off replacing that buggy code.

> BTW: Do the mount/losetup tools of SuSE work with loop-aes ?

Should work OK, but with different command line syntax. Many features won't
be available in SuSE mount/losetup/swapon.

> Or do the ones patched for loop-aes work with loop-fish2?

Yes, they work with SuSE's loop_fish2. Twofish loop module from
http://loop-aes.sourceforge.net/ciphers-v1.0h.tar.bz2 can be used in SuSE
compatible mode but with better interactive response than SuSE's loop_fish2.
That code has preemption points so kernel cipher code won't hog all
available CPU cycles.

I have attached a script that I use to do this. I run it from my
=2Exsession when I start X. It triggers a 'ssh-add -D' and a 'sudo -k'
when the screen locks, then fires a custom script 'mssh-add' on an
unblank. The xscreensaver-command manpage describes the -watch command
in some detail.

I like the idea of using PAM for the unblank and have toyed with the
idea of writing a module that would grab a sudo token, and try to add
my ssh keys (at least for the ones that use the same passphrase)
automatically when I unlock the screen.
