None of this is needed. All Knoppix CDs/DVDs I used had loop-aes included. Recently I encrypted the system partition (SuSE 10.2) from Knoppix live DVD and booted from previously prepared USB-stick. It may not include the most recent loop-aes version but v3 on-disc format is definitely supported. Knoppix is the right choice for maintenance work or simply to take a look at loop-aes.
