I have tried to to test the performance on /dev/hda to see if there is any problem there.

Unfortunately for me this failed with an i/o error, so it definitely do seem to be faulty hardware. This time I got kernel messages and smart log.
hda: dma_intr: status=0x51 { DriveReady SeekComplete Error }
hda: dma_intr: error=0x40 { UncorrectableError }, LBAsect=92821385, high=5, low=8935305, sector=92821033
ide: failed opcode was: unknown
end_request: I/O error, dev hda, sector 92821033
Buffer I/O error on device hda2, logical block 10379681
w83781d 1-0290: Starting device update
hda: dma_intr: status=0x51 { DriveReady SeekComplete Error }
hda: dma_intr: error=0x40 { UncorrectableError }, LBAsect=92821386, high=5, low=8935306, sector=92821041
ide: failed opcode was: unknown
end_request: I/O error, dev hda, sector 92821041
Buffer I/O error on device hda2, logical block 10379682
w83781d 1-0290: Starting device update
hda: dma_intr: status=0x51 { DriveReady SeekComplete Error }
hda: dma_intr: error=0x40 { UncorrectableError }, LBAsect=92821386, high=5, low=8935306, sector=92821049
ide: failed opcode was: unknown
end_request: I/O error, dev hda, sector 92821049
Buffer I/O error on device hda2, logical block 10379683
So I will just try to recover my data, and start over. Thanks for the pointing me in the direction I didnt want to go.
best regards
Kim
